If Bioware were really after courting controversy, just think of what they could have added: A transgender stereotype. As in a character you romance only telling you after you've been intimate. This is a cliche in a fair few TV 'dramas' as is, and is certainly incendiary. Personally, I'd have quite liked to see a TG at some point, just to see how they're percieved in the future (one would hope everyone is a little more openminded than currently at least).
I really wouldn't trust Bioware with writing a good TG character, given how western media tends to portray us. Seems sad but the only companies I'd trust to actually include a decent TG character in their games would be Japanese, Atlus in particular. Naoto in Persona 4 was pretty well written, aside from the whole aspect of what happens if you date her >.>, and Kanji, from the same game, has to be the best gay character in video games.
I dunno maybe I like the whole 'joke' they had with prostitutes at the pearl in DAO get to me too much, but yeah, would not trust Bioware to do it right.
Alas that was what I was thinking. All but one programme I've seen tackling TG have portrayed them as basically 'traps' for straight guys, as if all TGs ever want is single males in bars, only to then 'reveal'. Worse still is I know people in real life who 'know a guy who knows a guy who had this happen', which not only is unlikely, but stupid of said friends to even mention (Said group of friends have at least a few people they know who're TG, either MTF or FTM). Annoyingl, said single program that tried to be supportive was an episode of CSI where Grissom gave a quite nice and thoughtful speech, though it was trivilaised somewhat by the simple fact it felt a little forced.
I agree about the Japanese, though even then they can goe woefully wide of the mark with their portrayal, though at least they do try.
Also to something else I've seen a few times mentioned here (including the OP), more than 0.9% of the world's population are gay. It's at least closer to 10% (though most likely higher) which is not a tiny minority. Expecially if you break up the numbers into all their statistical components (male, female, ages, sexuality, ethnicity, religion and so forth). That 10% starts to look a lot bigger than a tiny minority.
