I do think they hadn't put enough thought into it. With the massive changes they made from ME1 to ME2, the Soldier class turned into the primary weapon class that carried the most guns and had all ammo mod skills. Although it became necessary because there wasn't much in the way of spare ammo lying around. Without powers, there isn't much purpose other than to be able to use all weapons (except SMG) and adapt to the situation with ammo mods.

I better way they could have done ME3 soldier, with their new weight system in place, would have been to negate the weight of a particular weapon, like the assault rifle, instead of a straight weight bonus. Although I suppose with how many other powers you got, there wasn't much purpose in a faster recharge.

I dunno, I've never been a fan of conventions in games that patently don't make sense (Halo's Super-soldier-in-powered-armour that can only carry two weapons probably being my major pet hate) and making it so the Soldier just treats one weapon as being 'weightless' smacks of a similar hack.

Personally I just think the existing weight of certain weapons needs a bit of a tweak. There's no good reason for, for instance, things like the Scimitar and the Valkyrie to be a heavy as they are. Hell, the Valkyrie is about 3-4 times the weight of the Avenger despite being based on it, that doesn't make sense.

I also think Ultralight Materials should have been an upgrade mod for all guns. Personally I quite like the tradeoff of having to forgo boosted damage or extra rounds to make a weapon lighter, but it didn't really make sense to restrict it to SMGs.

Maybe they should just let the soldier ignore the weight factor completely. For balance, that means no bonus for carrying less either. Especially in Multiplayer since you can only carry 2 weapons anyway.
