I have encountered two very hard battles, which really spoils Dragon Age II for me because I am playing at the lowest difficulty. At this point I have put the game away for a while. Hard battles like these really spoil the game for me. How many games have I dropped out of forever in the past because this.

The dragon battle at the mine is extremely hard. Significant problems are:

1. The dragon is extremely difficult to kill. This really really unfair. At the beginning of the game you could kill anything with your fists. Now you battle an enemy with very high kill ratio. This was just too long and too much effort for me and I didn’t enjoy it.

2. Dragonlings are hard to kill and they attack at the worst times. How could you ever beat this scene if you were playing at a harder level? In particular, you’re fighting the dragon and the dragonlings at the same time and the dragon has a lot of mean tricks at its disposal. I’ve been chewed at least 5 times. I’ve had to put this game away and come back to it several times.

3. You cannot use your health potion because most of the time it is disabled, especially while you are being attacked. In previous Dragon Age games you could use your health potions at any time. I had almost 900 health potions when I went into the final dragon battle in DA Origins. I now have health potion assigned to a key but I have to make a full retreat to a safe area to use it. I don’t understand the rules for this behavior and I don’t think it is explained in the booklet that comes with the game. This happens a lot in the later battles.

Spoiler:
My strategy to get through this scene is to let all of my friends go down (don’t want to say die because they always rise again). Then I had to keep away from the dragon while the dragonlings were after me. I would retreat to one end or the other of the field, which ever was farthest from the dragon. I would take health potions whenever I was allowed and would kill the dragonlings out of sight of the dragon. Otherwise I would try to keep to the rear of the dragon while attacking, which eventually let me bring it down. Sometimes I was able to take a health potion from the ring menu when I couldn’t do it from the hot key. That’s odd.

The battle with Meredith against the mages:

1. Yes, I decided to support Meredith. The mages are all out of control at some point. I get into this battle at the docks where I am overpowered very quickly and repeatedly. This battle is extremely hard. I’m afraid that this is the end of the game for me. Why do they do this in these games?

2. The shrieks (I think) come in groups of 4 and cannot seemingly be killed as previously in the game. I’ve been able to get behind the golden beast and attack from the rear; he is really dumb and rarely turns around. The shrieks eventually come and get me every time.

3. Again, I cannot use my health potions unless I am able to get far away from the fighting, and then only after some delay. What are the rules here?

Strategy:
I have no strategy for beating this fight because my hits don’t do much damage and I die quickly. How would you ever beat this battle in one of the hard modes? Does anyone have any advice here?

This probably goes in the Gameplay and Strategy forum ^^

I play on casual, too, and I don't have any difficulty with these two battles. Let me explain what I do:

High Dragon: Make sure you put fire protection runes on everyone armor or give them fire protection amulets and rings. It really helps. Make sure you go into the battle with either all mages and a warrior. If Hawke's a rogue, that's okay; bring a tank still and Merrill and Anders.

Make sure Anders can regenerate the party; that's under his specialty talent tree. If everyone dies, Anders can bring them back to life.

Let the warrior distract the dragon when she is on the ground. The warrior can take being chewed once or twice. While she's chewing on the warrior, you and the mages are blasting her.

When the dragonlings come, just try to take out as many as you can, i.e. using stuff like cone of cold, etc. Or stun them, then hack away.

Note: Throughout the game I tend to up one stat up to about 35, then I start working on constitution. I save the high dragon for the last quest before the end of the game. So, for example, for a mage, I will up his magic to about 35, then begin working on constitution. So by the time I get to the high dragon, he can take a lot of hits before going down.

The Last Straw: I assume you're talking about the battle on the docks? Not really sure, since I never sided with Meredith, but this battle is always the same. My advice for you here is to take all of your tough guys with you on this fight. I can now beat it with anyone b/c I've played the game so often lol but if you take Fenris, Aveline, Hawke, and maybe Anders, you should be okay. If you're a rogue or mage, stay out of the main fray and take out guys from the side. If you're a warrior, go in there and kill that pride demon before he kills your pals.

Motomotogirl,
Thanks for your comments. A little update:
Basically I got through the High Dragon segment, but I'm really stuck on the battle against the mages on the docs. Does anyone have any comments on the strange battle restrictions in these segments? I only have one saved game before the Docks battle, so maybe I'll go back there and side against Meredith and see what happens.

I'm somewhat lost in these fora, not what I'm used to on other sites, a little harder to navigate because they want to push Mass Effect 3. I'll look for that other thread.

First, with the dragon, a mage with as much fire resistance as you can possibly give him via runes and accessories is a big help. Keep the mage alive and he can fire a basic attack at the dragon a good part of the time the dragon is up on the ledge - wears that beast down. Isabella is good at killing dragonlings, if you keep her healed.

With Meredith, there a a few rare chance to hit her and, you need your heaviest damage dealer to do it as often as you can. With both a spirit healer that only uses basic attack and runs healing aura and group heal is a big help.
