I went with Ash because she's human and Garrus because he's been there since ME1.

Who did you go with and why?

Is there an more optimal team?

I had Garrus and Vega with me until I completed the Missile firing part. Then I went with Vega and Javik for the last run.

I did the exact same thing (Ashley and Garrus) because Ash is my love interest and Garrus is my best bud. I usually take biotics on normal missions (because I have no biotic skills and they're super useful) but I was expecting an ending similar to ME2, where you've got characters dangling off cliffs, etc. Garrus and Ashley would've been more emotional in those scenes for me...but it never happened.

Tali and Garrus. They'd been with me the whole trilogy, it only seemed fitting to end it with them.

I take my LI everywhere even if they're not that useful just for the dialogue and fun stuff, but last mission dialogue = no real effect.
so I went with Liara and Garrus, just coz I could

Liara - her powers are extremely useful against multiple waves of Reaper infantry.
Javik - because he simply deserves to take part in kicking the Reapers in their a**.

My ME1 squad, Ashley and Garrus. Can't count how many times I saw a husk running at FemShep and explode into bloody pieces due to Garrus being so pro with his sniper rifle. And Ash has a really hardcore DOT factor. Just give her a laser and she'll pew pew and whittle mobs down.

Been using Garrus/Liara Garrus/Javik for most of the game until FemShep got Stasis. Not that Garrus needs a frozen target to shoot its head off but still...

On my next playthrough, I'll probably go with Vega and Liara.

Liara - singularity + warp detonation

Tali - energy drain to strip down shields of Marauders and barriers on Banshees + combat drone to cover my ass when I need to move from cover because of the grenade-spamming cannibals >.<

Garrus and Liara(LI)

Because i wanted to kick reaper ass with those which i loved most, and true friends will walk in hell together. I was afraid that they might die but they were saved by harbinger's plot hole ray which moved them to normandy which made no sense in any way because this was the battle of no retreat.

I just wanted to shepard to get his well earned holiday with garrus on that beach he talked about in the end, and also spend time with liara in peace.

Garrus and Liara.

They were the team that assaulted Ilos and the Citadel in ME1, it was only fitting they fought with me in the final battle.

Liara kept dying though. I'm glad Harbinger's laser transported them to the Normandy instead of killing them.

Javik, James and my adept. That entire level I spam grenades and warp bombs at anything that even looks at me the wrong way.

I went with EDI and Liara.
Decoy was extremly usefull when I had to defend the missile batteries, especially against the banshees.

Vega and Ash. They're both human so if they get stuck, at least they get stuck on earth and if they die one of them is a horrible racist and the other has/had a death wish.

It's like Sophie's Choice in gaming.

Vega and Liara. Vega for Revenant wielding meatshield who gives bonus to shields for entire team and Liara for crowd control with her biotics.

I didnt use shield removal team mates simply because I was playing Soldier with Mattock/Black Widow and maxed out Incendiary ammo, shields or not anything smaller then Brute or Banshee was bursted down in seconds anyway.

I went with Kaidan and EDI, I have a preference for sentinels after ME2 and knew I'd see a few armoured and shielded opponents in the mission. I'm not sure what I'll do this time, maybe Garrus and Tali for any ME1 references. And I'll have to take Javik the next time whenever that may be

Javik and EDI, because my Shepard thought there was a good chance of death. Javik would like to die fighting the Reapers, and it doesn't matter if EDI is killed.

Kaidan and Garrus, who also were with me in the final battle against Saren on the Citadel... Also because Kaidan is my Shep's LI and Garrus her best friend.

And for some really seriously very ridiculous space magic occurance, both of them are also the two that came out of the Normandy with Joker at the jungle planet.
