Originally considered the tougher James and Javik, but finally I picked Kaidan and Liara. They'd been there from the very beginning.

Didn't really use biotic detonations until this level. So many screaming Banshees in the final battle, Kaidan's Reave + Liara's Warp saved my ass. Oh, and thank you EDI, for gifting me Decoy. I don't think the Banshees always fell for it, but it probably saved my Shepard too.

For the first part I brought Ashley and Garrus and for the last part I brought James and Javik

I took Tali and Garrus, for the simple fact that the endings were ruined for me, and I figured that with no relays then no food for them. It was the humane thing to do. The second time I beat it I took Liara and Javik though, much easier.

I take EDI because we end up having to call her to fix the damn missiles anyway and Javik so he gets to see another Reaper die (that's 3 for 3 Javik, you're welcome).

Insanity is so easy in this game that it makes me think it doesn't really matter. I am offering this opinion after having gone through multiple Insanity runs with different classes.

My Insanity Vanguard went with Garrus and EDI for the final part. Squad cryo ammo plus Garrus's with the Geth Pulse Rifle is extremely effective. His AP ammo is very useful when it comes to fighting all those Brutes and Banshees. EDI has a nice mix of abilities - Overload to take down shields, Incinerate to hurt them once that's done. And Decoy can be a nice way of keeping the pressure off while I'm charging around. Garrus is probably the more essential of the two - EDI could be substituted with Liara or Javik. Although with all those Marauders around, having two people with Overload is helpful.

I picked Garrus and Kaidan my first time on the final mission. Garrus because he was my Shepard's LI, and Kaidan because she dumped him for Garrus (and he wanted to redeem himself so why not?). Garrus was with her the whole time, so it made sense for them to fight together until the end.  I was hoping for tearful goodbyes and amazing dialogue (if my Shepard had to die).  It seemed like it would be perfect for Garrus and Kaidan to be there.

When I found out it was a possibility for the squadmates with you to die, I now prefer to bring Javik (he's going to commit suicide anyway) and EDI (because I always choose "Destroy" and she's going to die anyway too). I'm a horrible person, but at least more people don't have to die.

Liara - Love spamming singularity.

Javik - Love his Jamaican accent. Figured he would talk the reapers to death ala Ja Ja Binks.

Liara and Kaidan. Kaidan can support you or Liara with detonations, whether biotic or tech, and Liara can do biotic detonations even by herself with Singularity's insanely short cooldowns. Liara can also increase Kaidan's dps on his particle rifle (as if the weapon needs more damage) with her squad Warp Ammo. Those two as a setup is a tier above others imo.
