The criteria for the Hijacker achievement is to hijack an atlas mech. I have hijacked one in both Grissom Academy and The Illusive Man's base, but neither time I got it. Game glitch?

I could be wrong, but I think hijacking an atlas means killing the driver of it to get it. ie - not just an empty one you find lying around.

Edit:   Adding a link (POSSIBLE SPOILERS AFTER THE JUMP, although this page should only show the Hijacker achievement) to this achievement on an achievement guide.

Also, from the little time I had to actually play the game, I would say that this is best done as early in the game as possible (Cannot be done to the first Atlas encountered).  Since I ran into the issue of destroying the Atlas when killing the pilot after shattering the glass.

You cannot hijack the mechs that appear at the end of the mission. ie; they are the last enemy to appear. When you try to snipe the driver of it, the mech just explodes.

You also cannot get the achievement for taking the empty mech on (I think) the Grissom Academy mission.

I got the achievement on the Illusive Man base, as there is a mech that appears early on there.

The achievement DID pop for me when I took the empty one on Grissom. Likely you got unlucky and encountered a glitch.
Maybe try it out on a new character? I don't recall it taking too long to get to the Grissom mission

Wow. I was sure killing only the driver was impossible. Thanks.

I didn't get it with the one at Grissom, and only got it on my 2nd playthru when you get the Prothean. I killed everyone with it. However, on insane, I hijacked one but it lasted about 0.8 seconds before it was destroyed.

Wait I'm confused. What exactly did you use? because according to my S guide you can claim it  by "cracking the shell of the glass then killing the Atlas driver." My thinking was your suppose to walk up to it and hit A or something (Which i tried on multiplayer and was downed by a assualt gaurd, silly me). I do agree with the sniper rifle thing because that does seem to kill it. However it to me would make more sense if you grab the Atlas from Grisson Academy after killing the combat mech engineer and get the achivement. I feel like this is a bug but frankly I do find it a possible claim on both single and multiplayer. prob with multi is....someone usually prefers killing it for some random reason. I guess instinct.

I killed the driver and got in the atlas, twice. Once on the Citadel and then by the Illusive Man base. But, I still have not got the achievement.

Started the game up now and I, all of a sudden, have the achievement.

How do you shoot out the glass? I've tried it last night at the Academy with a Javelin and it wasn't working.

It's best to use a low powered sniper rifle or other weapon (by comparison to the Javelin or Widow) to shatter the glass. Otherwise you risk flat out destroying the Atlas.

Did you Hijack as in get in an empty one that was already sitting around (since you referenced Grissom Academy, I'm guessing this is so)?  To "hijack" one for the achievement you must actually break the glass of one that is already in control and kill the driver WITHOUT destroying the mech.  This actually takes specialized weapons as alot of weapons will weaken the mech to the point that it will explode (if it only has about 1/8-1/4 armour left, it will explode even though it's not down all the way).

You must also have it's shield down all the way to break the glass.  I recommend and overload or some weapon to quickly get down the shield before it can get to close.  Then in my opinion, the best weapon to go forward with is a sniper rifle.  You want to be the least specialized against armour as you can, so no cryo/incendiary rounds, no armour piercing (from my experience the piercing does not actually penetrate the glass and hurt the driver inside, it only takes down more armour damage) otherwise you may get the armour too low.

You may also want to consider using an accurate shotgun and make sure to assault the glass of the mech only until it breaks though again, I wouldn't recommend anything too damning against armour.  If you have it, use something like adrenaline rush so you can make sure you hit the glass otherwise the shot will be a waist.

However you manage to break the glass, definitely use a sniper rifle or very accurate assault rifle (I highly highly recommend the Raptor sniper rifle for all of this, it's intense accuracy and rapid fire capability with little recoil makes it ideal for the shattering and definitely the killing of the operator) to shoot the guy inside.  You will want to go for headshots if you can but take him out without damaging the Atlas as much as possible.  Try to get your companions occupied with another enemy so they don't hurt the mech any more than it needs to be.  As soon as he is dead, the mech will either stop and open up or it will look like electricity is surrounding it.  If it is the latter, run, because it was too low and now it's going to explode.  If not, then you're in luck, you just found yourself a new toy!

Edit: This is all from personal experience.  I find the Raptor has so far been the best choice on Insanity.  I kind of stumbled upon it as my loadout consists of the prothean rifle, the scorpion, tempest SMG, Claymore shotgun and the Raptor (to double as a traditional AR and a sniper rifle) and I have had a lot of success using the Raptor on Atlases while still leaving 1/4-1/2 armor.

That's not completely true. First Atlas I encountered was in the Prothean DLC, guess when I got my achievement? :P
