To my great sadness and embarrassment, it looks like there is a bug here that got introduced just before ship. It looks like the test for "is it time for ambient dialog in engineering" accidentally got switched to "are you good friends with Ashley". How did this bug happen? I have no idea, and need to do some detective work. This doesn't just block Ken and Gabby banter, but I think this blocks some Tali and Garrus banter in engineering too. As it stands now to see that banter, I believe you'll need to get Ashley in your party and take her on missions and/or give Ashley lots of attention by speaking to her and giving her the gift in the hospital. If you have Kaidan in your game, obviously this can't be done, and that sucks.

Though the fix is easy, the difficult part is getting the fix into a patch of some sort. Getting content fixes into patches is much harder than you'd think. It's a giant process. I'll try to get that fix through, but sadly, the odds of getting this type of fix into a patch is very low. It just kills me that so many of the people who care about Ken and Gabby (those of you reading this forum) didn't get to see that content. I tested the heck out of it too for weeks before ship. You just don't now how sorry I am.

Um I bought the Poem books and gave them to Ash in the hospital and I also gave her lots of atention, I even dumped Liara for Ash in ME3  I took Ash on nearly every mission too once whe rejoined my could rejoin my Squad and still don't have the Ken and Gabby dialogue stuff.

I also shot the back stabber instead of letting Ash do it, ya know the Back stabber I'm talking about right? It was great to shoot 'em too!

Hope that helps ya with this bug?

By the way, Dusty, is Ashley's content bugged too?

As far as I know, Ashley's content is not bugged.  Are you seeing something wrong?

The problem with Ashley is that she doesn't have much to say after she gets back aboard the Normandy.

thanks for letting us know. I actually didnt have a problem with this since i had the appropriate conditions to generate the conversation. Also to note they dont really say anything until later in the game like after the attack on the citadel i believe

Actually, they are SUPPOSED to banter much earlier and through out the game.  The reason you only saw it later was that you can only buddy up to Ashley after she joins the Normandy, and the bug connected a check to Ashley for who-knows-why.

does not mean that Shep has to romance Ashley.. If not I'm screwed -

:(

You don't need to romance Ashley, but you do need to speak with her a bunch. However, romancing her definitely enables the banter. Basically the erroneous check is "Is Ashley a good friend?" and your true love is automatically considered to be a close friend.

This explains alot. I didn't start getting any banter from Ken and Gabby until around about half way through the game.

Hmm, shame to hear that, hopefully the bug will get corrected at some point (both for the Ken/Gabby ambient dialogue, but also for the Tali ambient dialogue that the bug also affects)

The leaks had some great comments by them like Ken talking about EDI's new body...

That was included in the game.  I heard that line right before I started the final mission.  Strange, considering EDI had been with you the whole game and he only mentioned it at the end.  Maybe it's a random occurrence...?

I never got the Ken Gabby support moment though, maybe I missed out. I would have totally loved to walk in on them. And poke fun, of course. As their friend. Totally.

I gave Ash the gift in the hospital and talked to her alot, but never took her on many missions. Didn't need another soldier after all. Am I missing something here?

I was let down by Gabby and Ken in Mass Effect 3. They brought the voice actors back to do what... about five lines? Same for Adams. Too much Zaeed-esq convos for the crew. The pair had some genuinely laugh out loud childish moments in Mass Effect 2 "I dunno, Miranda's catsuit always makes me stand at attention" etc.

I also expected to see Adams and Tali chatting more.

I got the content...

:o:blink: I was good friend with Ash!? I betrayed her and left her on the Normandy 99% of the mission with tons of Whisky to keep her down...

Guess the Ash in your universe wants it rough? :innocent:

Whatever - I still wonder if more banter is bugged. There are several more files in the game implying more dialogue that's never heard in the game (and given the fact we have less options than before, not all those lines are alternative options): does BW simply dummied them out? Or are some dialogues missing?

Dusty, as I said, I also wonder why Ashley isn't wandering around. She's moving in her cabin, besides that, she does not interact with any other character. Bugged?

Ouch, I'm sad to hear about this bug. In my main playthroughs I always have Kaidan.
I really like Ken and Gabby, but I guess I will just have to fill the gaps and imagine that they didn't need any input from Shepard to get closer :\\
Still, it's a shame...

Ohh wow   =)    I missed that there should be things going on in engineering. I always have Kaidan with me but I am happy to hear that Ken and Gabby will get together on another Normandy at least.  Those clips with Ken and Gabby were really cute. Guess I'll come by this thread every now and then to see what I am missing. Hope you find that bug and good luck.

And Thank you so much for coming to the forum, Dusty Everman    :wizard:   that is really nice of you!

I know it is not your fault, but saying you are
aware of the problem but you are not sure you will be able to get it into a
patch is totally unacceptable. We paid good money for this product
so to hear that you are aware of a problem, aware of a solution, but that the
odds that it will get fixed are nonetheless “very low,” is infuriating.
Obviously you want to get this fixed. But if I worked at a company that refused
to fix a problem they knew how to fix, I would quit, especially when the fix was
“easy”.

I am usually not the type that says that if some
problem is not fixed I will never buy a company’s product again. But the
arrogance of a company that chooses
not to fix a problem it has the capability of fixing is staggering.

I have never pirated a game. I will never pirate
a game. I would give up gaming before I pirated a game. But when I read
something like this, it makes me understand why some don’t care about doing
right by developers. Why should they, when the developers have no respect for
their customers.

huh, that's interesting. i DID wonder why they always said "board's green for me" and never anything else.

hopefully this'll get patched - or we'll get a save editor so we can check the 'friends with ashley even though she's nuclear ash(ley)' box

You would think that after the Conrad Verner thing in Mass Effect 2 they would have been more careful. Hopeful this time they do their job and fix the problem.

Oh so there is a bug with Ken and Gabby. I was wondering why the engineering was so darn quiet compared to other decks in my FemShep playthrough with Kaidan versus my ManShep playthrough with Ashley. That clarifies things. Ah... that does suck indeed.

If you cannot incorporate a fix into a future patch, what about incorporating it into a future DLC?

EDIT: and I do not mean make the scene or scenario a DLC, but rather include the code to kinda sneak in while the DLC content is added.

Wait, why is it very unlikely for it to be patched? Legal problems? I mean, I've seen this sort of stuff get patched in indie games and other smaller games... And do you mean it will never be patched? D:

Is it same reason for why you never fixed Conrad bug, the Sierta Base mission flag in first game and other import related glitches?

I’ve heard a couple people ask that if a fix is easy, why would a patch be difficult? That’s a very good question. Here are a few reasons why.

1. Fixing a bug could accidentally introduce worse bugs.

The Gabby/Ken bug is a great example of this. It turns out that just before ship QA found a bug where an Ashley dialog on the Citadel could get stuck under certain import/game mode situations. The person who fixed that bug unknowing introduced the Gabby/Ken bug, and this was after Gabby/Ken had been tested. The Ashley fix was tested on the Citadel, but of course the whole game of 30+ hours with many import and choice variations can’t be retested for every small change. That portion of the Normandy wasn’t retested because we believed it hadn’t been changed and was solid.

2. There can be technical issues.

In this case, the bug was introduced in a tool we call Story Manager. As of today, changes in Story Manager content can’t really be put into a patch due to some technical limitations. Our programmers are fixing those limitations, but until that work is actually successful, we can’t be 100% sure that Story Manager fixes can happen.

3. Content fixes in DLC bloat downloads.

Sometimes we can do fixes in the content instead of the code. However, this adds to the size of download on your disk, and due to how the content is structured, you don’t just get the fix. You get a copy of a bunch of other stuff, so depending on the situation, the amount added could be large.

4. The people who notice the fix may be so small as to not offset the risks and costs of a fix.

For example with the Ken/Gabby bug, the only people who notice that bug are those that imported a save game from ME2 where Ken and Gabby survived the Collector base, and they care enough about Ken and Gabby to recruit them again and go down and visit them in engineering. Though I’d like to believe that is a huge number of people, truthfully it’s probably a small fraction of the players. As with everything in life, our resources aren’t infinite, so we need to make judgment calls of were to apply our QA and development efforts.

I’m in no way saying that the Ken/Gabby bug won’t be fixed. Actually, I’m more encouraged than ever that the fix will get put into a future patch or DLC. We just can’t make any promises. I just wanted to shed some light on why knowing about a fix isn’t the same as being able to deliver a fix. I know that any answer that isn’t “We will fix 100% of the known bugs” will make some people angry, and I apologize for that. If we followed that, it would be impossible for us to make a large, rich game for you. I can say that everyone on our team cares deeply about the quality of experience we are providing to you. We do try our best.

Hmm, I see =/ Thanks for the quick answer... I hope its fixed sometimes in future, I hate story/plot/character dialog glitches in games with good story x-x; Hence why I was bit annoyed save file import bugs never got fixed
