In the end, sometimes, I think the ultimate issue with the ending of Mass Effect 3 is moreso that they tried to tie things off, but did it so poorly that it ultimately shot the series in the foot at the very last step. If I were to dissolve the ending down to 3 choices that could've been achieved by playing through that became a result of the actions, maybe I would've been more satisfied with the endings.
Let's assume they removed the whole, 'Stranded on an island' scenario,
as well as 'destroys all synthetics' and the option of 'Shepard
Lives/Dies based on making this choice. If that's the case, I think they should've tackled the endings by making each of your choices throughout the game unlock various 'paths'
For example;
Destroy Ending - This ending could be reached only if you made 2 Paragon Choices (Save the Council / Destroy the Base) or 2 Renegade options (Let the council die / keep the base.) If you destroyed the Geth on Rannoch, and also if you destroyed the Heretics, this contributes towards this ending.
Synethesis Ending - Synthesis doesn't necessarily destroy the races in my opinion. Rather, it makes all the races a hybrid between Machines + Organics. In otherwords, you can have a Synthetic Asari, Turian, Quarian, etc... And they'll retain their unique properties - but they'll also be somewhat augmented (as we can see in the ending with Joker's arms and the vein-like wires glowing on his arms.), likewise we see Edi is alive in this one, and we don't know what sort of effect this has on her - but we can assume things like the Geth retain their individuality in this secenario.
Chooices for this ending would include Wheather or not you supported the Geth, or alternatively if you got the Geth and the Quarian to work together this ending would be open as well. If you Rewrote the Heretics, I feel this would help in unlocking this option.
Control Ending - Arguably, this one would require that you had heavy support of the Illusive Man to reach, as well as empathis on human dominance and power. This means minor things should come into play - Did you support Terra Nova, a human-dominance campaign? Did you ensure the Collector's base survived the ending?
Now, from above, as you can see, there are some scenarios that 'overlap', meaning that you would get locked out of one situation, or you would get locked into other situations. It would allow the game to be different between different playthroughs, while presenting an element of choice.
All that I would need to add to the current set is an 'after the choice' effect, where we can see how our actions affected the characters.
I feel if our choices had mattered in reaching the ending, and maybe more diversity in the endings as well as expanding upon what happened afterwards in stead of the ending we recieved would've been far better. Ultimately, I fear the design goal of making this game accessible to new players was this game's own greatest undoing.
Anyways, just a jumbled mess of thoughts on how I wish our actions could've attributed more to the ending. Ultimately, it doesn't feel like they did at all. =/
So I continue to think about the ending of Mass Effect 3-
