Just wondering if there is a list? Only i didnt get any of EDI's powers despite talking to her and getting her into a relationship with Joker....what did i miss?

Is there a specific point you need to talk to each squadmate to get their skill?

Every companion gives you 2 powers. As a rule of thumb, they generally give you one early after you recruit them and one later after their personal story is complete (Javik being an exception as his mission is his introduction effectively).

As far as EDI, iirc you get defense matrix right after she gets her body and decoy after you beat Kai Leng.

I an unsure on this, but it might be that you must use investigative chat to unlock the ability (click the left side of the wheel before clicking the right side).

There definitely are specific points where you must speak to your squadmate in order to receive their second bonus power. For example, I neglected to speak to Liara after Thessia on my first playthrough and therefore missed out on Stasis. There is a lock-out period for these conversation, because I couldn't simply talk to Liara once I had finished more missions, I had to start another playthrough or revert to just after Thessia to receive Stasis.

As far as a list goes, I'll list all the powers, the first comes immediately upon recruiting the member, the second usually after their homeworld/personal story is over. For example, I doubt EDI's is tied specifically to Kai Leng but more to the terminals in Cerberus that tell her story.

Liara
Warp Ammo
Stasis

Warp Ammo immediately upon recruitment, Stasis after Thessia.

Garrus
Armor Piercing Ammo
Proximity Mine

AP Ammo I believe once recruited, I think Proximity Mine is received after the Krogan join the war but I  can't be sure.

James
Carnage
Fortification

Can't remember when I  received either, I think one is tied to boxing with him.

Tali
Defense Drone
Energy Drain

One when she comes on board and temp joins you, the other after you save her homeworld (You musn't kill her/let her die)

Ashley
Marksman
Inferno Grenade

Kaiden
Barrier
Reave

I think that both Ash +  Kaiden's powers are received in the hospital and then when they rejoin the Normandy, but I  could be wrong. You might not get the first until they rejoin you but it seems late to me.

Javik
Slam
Dark Channel

I think these come around the same time, but you might have to wait a bit for Dark Channel.

Can bonus powers be transferred between player characters? Say if I wanted to use barrier or reave - import a Kaidan alive save and go through conversations to access them. Can they then be used on a character who has ashley alive?

You tend to get the first major bonus powers during the first conversations wiith each squadmate. In the case of the VS, you get their second power after having a conversation with them if you allow them back onto the normandy (in other words, the first conversation on the Normandy after they rejoin the squad).

Yes, it's just like the Samara/Morinth thing from ME2. Once you unlock the power, it's unlocked permanently for future playthroughs.

You were right in your original edit of this, Dark Channel comes after the conversation where you talk in depth about the memory shard near the end of the game. (forgot after which mission, possibly after beating Kai Leng)

just checking, is Defense Matrix a shield boost like GSB or is it an armor boost...the description on the wiki site is a little vague

Vega gives Fort for the boxing the first time you talk to him. I think Carnage is tied to the conversation about him going N-code.

Defense Matrix, Fortification & Tech Armor all grant flat damage reduction, separate from shield or armor. Each applies a different effect when you deactivate it; the effect of Defense Matrix is to max your shield.

Keep talking to her after your missions. Pretty much every squadmate gives you 1 power in the early to middle portion of the game and then gives you their second power closer to the late middle to end of the game. Some powers you wil only have for the last couple of missions, but they will be unlocked and usable in your next playthrough from the start.

Defense Matrix is the closest one, but as others have already noted, it's not exactly the same. You get a flat damage reduction until you "purge" the matrix by using it again. When you purge it, you get 70 or 100% of shields restored immediately (depending on the choices you make evolving it). The downside is that you get a small delay to power recharge while it's active.

As a Geth Shield Boost fan in ME2, I actually like the change. It makes you have to play slightly more strategically.

I think Barrier still works largely the same as in ME2, and since Barrier was just a slightly different biotic version of GSB, you could go with that.

Anyone have any idea when Warp Ammo becomes available? I haven't received anything from Liara and I've completed the Palaven/Menae mission, just about to do Sur'Kesh, just finished the Grissom Academy mission.

Have to admit that I can't stand this new approach to unlocking bonus powers. Not only is it glitched to hell and back, but you've no idea something is wrong until you've gone far enough through for it not to be an option to reload.

I didn't get Dark Channel until Javik used the Echo Shard which was pretty late in the game.

Interestingly enough. If you don't really "Change" Javik into softie, he says he is going to the Hanar homeworld after the war and live like a god. If you do make him softer, he will say he's going to commit suicide (seppuku?) after the war.

I think you get Carnage when James comes to your cabin and talk about joining the N7 program.

I don't remember exactly when I got Defense Matrix but I do know that it was available after agreeing to answer any questions she had about love and human behavior.

The best thing is that is that bonus powers are treated like achievments, once you unlock them they're unlocked for for good.

Except this seems to not be entirely the case, if you do a NG+ with the second character you seem to lose access to the bonus powers you gained from the first character. So for example on my vanguard who has Ashley alive I was able to take Barrier as a bonus power after having done a playthrough on my soldier who has Kaiden, but when i took the Vanguard to NG+ Barrier and Reave were both no longer options and since I dont have kaiden I obviously have no way to gain them again.

In fact now that i went back and look the second character appears to have wiped the bonus powers from the first so the first character can only take Ash's bonus powers now as well and cannot take Kaidens

Doubtful, since they're only activated once (IIRC) and not many are taking notes as to specifically when they occur.

I can tell you that:

Slam: Unlocks after the first time you speak to Javik, straight after the DLC mission, at the point where he mentions that the Salarians used to eat flies

Fortification: After you've 'danced'/sparred with Vega, first time you speak to him properly on the Normandy

AP ammo: After you recruit Garrus and have your first discussion with him about what he's been up to since ME2

Warp Ammo: During the conversation Liara has about how long the Reapers will take to wipe out galactic civilisation - not sure when this talk can happen, for me it happened directly after the N7:Cerberus Lab mission, which I did just after Priority:Sur'Kesh. This was *not*, as some have said, immediately after recruitment.

I'm keeping an eye on when new stuff gets activated. Still haven't got EDI's defence matrix (not that I'm particularly bothered about that, a gun-toting biotic uses only Warp Ammo :P) and haven't recruited anyone else yet.

To get Stasis with Liara, you need to talk to her in her cabin after Thessia, but also after she's threatened to turn Javik into paste. I unlocked it yesterday on NG+ insanity, didn't think to go and talk to her after she confronts Javik in my first playthrough.

You walk in, cheer up a very tearful Liara, give her something to focus on and Stasis unlocks.
