I don't understand the people that complain about the Hornet's recoil. It's very manageable, just compensate for it by slowly moving your aim down as you fire (oh, and for the love of god fire from cover). If you use it on a Turian with stability bonuses, you can even line up consistent headshots with it, which makes it do surprisingly good damage. It's my favorite SMG.

The Tempest is also surprisingly solid; not the beast it was in ME2, but solid.

The Hurricane is, naturally, very good.

The Shuriken is a joke and should not be used as a reference point for all SMGs. It's always been terrible, even in ME2 (dear god it's painful to be stuck with that thing until you recruit Tali), and it always will be terrible.

The recoil isn't the problem I face with the Hornet, it's the three round burst throwing off my timing.  I'm accustomed to single fire or full auto, bursts just mess with my timing.  I usually sling a Revenant for a primary so coil is something I account for by reflex.

Don't aim with the Hornet (counter-intuitive as that may seem). The recoil is noticeably less if you "fire from the hip," and you don't have to pull down on the cursor as much.

Otherwise, do as Variasaber suggested.

out of what you have the Tempest is the best.

Hornet is a burst fire so suffers some major issues, Locust does terrible damage.

Shuriken suffers the same issues as the Hornet.

the Tempest is the best SMG besides the Hurricane which outclasses effectivly everything else in DPS.

Well in that case, I recommend pumping the trigger as fast as you can; this will make it fire at a rate very close to full auto, which should make recoil compensation much more doable, especially if you're used to dealing with a Revenant. Also, practice... the Hornet does take some getting used to, but it's a very solid option once you've adjusted to it. And, once again, I recommend using a Turian.

Normally I hate burst fire weapons, and I won't touch the Vindicator or Incisor with a ten-foot pole, but I found the Hornet to be much easier to adjust to. If it's just not your style though, that's fine too, the Tempest and Hurricane are suitable enough.

My personal favorite default SMG w/o DLCs is Tempest because of its ammo count and damage output and I can really control the recoil fairly well so it can be much more accurate in suppressive fire when in the right hands which really applies to any weapon.

The obvious is the hurricane.

After that, I like the CSM and the Hornet. As mentioned above, hip fire the hornet.
