The person who did 90% of the damage from what I've experienced. You get what is called an Assist bonus but that depends on how much damage you do to a particular enemy before the enemy dies. As I stated earlier the more kills you get the more medals you get, the more medals you have the more xp you get. It's all relative.

There seems to be a bonus for getting a kill shot though. More then a few times other people have been beating an Atlas and I have come in late and just sniped the last few boxes and have gotten 300-500 points.

Also it seems damage to shields does not matter as much as damage to armour/health. I have cleared the shields on a target and maybe gotten a 1/3 of the health/armour and yet end up with about 30-40% of the points.

While there is not kill stealing as such there is point hording.

Not true. Why? Because the medals you earn add to your overall XP. This is why the more kills you get the better your overall reward is. That is why the more kills the quicker you level up.

The medals are added to your score which is then added together and given to everyone as experience points.

Right - this is the point that no one else is making. Yes, getting a kill medal (25, 50, or 75 kills) does give more XP... but it's distributed equally. So if someone steals all your kills and ends up with the 75 kills medal you will get the same amount of XP as if you had the medal. The only difference is they got the medal (which means nothing once you click through that screen to get back to the lobby.

FWIW, I had someone complaining about me stealing his kills once. I was tempted to message him after the game and say, "sorry princess, did I make you cry?" But I couldn't be bothered, really.

I just had a kid just deliberately block my shots repeatedly to the extent he followed me around the map just to stop me shooting anything. I sent him a message asking why and his reply was "You stole my kill!!". When I said it is a team game his reply was "but I like my badges."

Now I don't know about you but in the middle of a firefight ANY ENEMY IS A LEGITIMATE TARGET in my book. If it's alive it's a threat. This kid called "azarale" on the 360 thinks that anything he is shooting at should be his and his alone. In the end I just left because he just wouldn't stop grieving me.

Players like that make me

uhhhhhhh
he should **** off back to CoD or whereever the 12 year olds are hanging out now

That's an insult to 12 year olds.

Actually the more kills you get the higher the points you get and the more xp you get. The less kills you get the less points you get and the less xp you get and the slower it is to leveling up. I know I've ended up at the bottom of the screen when the mission finishes with the lowest xp amount in the mission end screen.

Wrong, wrong, WRONG!

All XP are shared, no exceptions. Any medals, badges earned throughout the match do also contribute to the final pool of XP that are equally shared to every player on the team. Everyone gets the exact same amount of XP.

Why is this myth so very foolhardedly trying to stay alive?

I don't mind "kill stealing." This is a team game and the faster enemies go down the better. Heck I've gotten the gold assist pin on a LOT of silver games.

There is no kill-stealing in this game. That's ridiculous. Too many times have I let someone "take the kill" only to get themselves brought down by the enemy. This is a team-based game anyway, we should all be shooting at the same clusters of enemies.

The only thing in multiplayer that gets me a little annoyed annoyed is if one guy is 6000 points ahead of everyone else. If the 4th place guy is at 3000, 3rd at 4000, 2nd at 4500, and then 1st is up at 12000... would it hurt for you to cut back a bit and let others play lol? It seems to happen with vanguards a lot.

I'm not exactly good at this game, so if I'm "killstealing" I'm not doing it deliberately. Usually I play as an engineer, and if my powers recharge and I have an enemy in sight I will hit overload or incinerate without checking if someone else is trying to kill them.

Though I must admit it's funny to get "kill" messages while I'm not even near the enemy in question because my combat drone is off somewhere doing the killstealing for me. ;-)

What is annoying is when a kill is "stolen" just as you fired a rocket. You only get two of those per map, and if three people use them on the same enemy at the same time that's just a waste. Too bad that no one seems to use voice chat (on PC), because if they did they could at least tell you they were about to use a weapon like that so you don't waste yours.

I don't mind, but if I just spent five minutes kiting around two banshees and get them to barely one bar of armour left I do get kinda pissed when the level two soldier spams his temptest at them and gets credit for both.

This is exactly the kind of thing that I really don't care about. Once four my badguys are killed (which will happen in a few seconds, no doubt), it's forgotten who killed it.

But I've never played CoD or GoW multiplayer, so maybe I just don't get it...

Becuase it's not really a common thing in games like this.  Most games, even co-op games, track each person's XP gains independantly.  So, in a game like Gears of War's Horde mode, there really is such a thing as kill-stealing, because if someone headshots a guy right before I melee him to death, he gets the points and I get nothing.

In this game, everyone's performance is pooled at the end and everyone gets the same amount of XP.  As long as the enemy dies, you get points.  But that's not adequately explained anywhere (that I noticed), so people come in under the assumption that it's all individual like GoW or Halo Firefight, and therefore are angry about being 'robbed' of their hard-earned points....which would be legitimate, if that mattered in this game.  It does not.

The people who are angry about kill-stealing aren't wrong, per se, but they are incorrect.

I get it. So in those games is it more like every man for himself? 'Cause I really like the way it is in ME, where if I'm firing away at a Guardian, I'm thankfull when my team mate flanks him and takes him out.

The only other game I've played like this was Rainbow Six, but that's always been splitscreen with a friend and I never really cared abot XP because it was on his machine before I had my XBox.

Step 1: Leave
Step 2: Get another game.

it takes like 10-15 seconds on the PC.

The only time I will complain about a kill-steal (to myself) is when it ruins a combo/chain that would have helped us out more. This is why I don't play Quarian Engineer anymore (aside from the turret), getting a cryo-explosion seemed an impossible waste of my time.

I personlly don't care, if people want to "steal" kills. What a ridiculous term. The point of this mp is to take down all enemies as fast as possible. Who cares how that is done. If you are getting kills stolen maybe it's because you need to kill faster.

The only thing that ever annoyed me was i played quarian engineer and hacked turrets but my teammates would shoot and destroy the turrets even though it's shooting the enemy now. So i found the qe to be rather useless against cerebus because of that.

I dont see the appeal, each class has to have their parts in the killing..
Engineers are usually distraction-experts, destroyers of armor/shields/barriers.. and get tons of assists.. for example.

Yeah, it really bugs me when someone guns down a Ravager I was setting up to explode and take out its babbies.
