Though I think the main reason that I dislike aps like steam is you're still paying full price for something you don't even get a physical copy of. I could have sworn one of the main "selling points" Gabe used to toss around was "Games will be cheaper!" mmmm hmm, right, certainly doesn't seem to be the case though.

I'm sure its far better now than at launch no doubt, still, I have zero desire to rely on it.

Games generally are cheaper in DD.  Steam and D2D frequently have sales that no physical distributor would ever dream of having.

Almost all the DD games I have are from price grabs, and that's why I like Steam.  I have about 18 games on Steam and I haven't paid more than 100 USD for all of them combined.  I don't think anyone could ever claim that about a retail distributor.

Now for new games and such, I always prefer to buy a physical copy and do agree with you.

But for everything else it's Steam or D2D for me.

Many people don't remember the coup that was Counterstrike:Source that made Steam as successful as it is today.

True ownage that Valve pulled on Vivendi, later to be double ownage. Now Blizzard Vivendi is still super powerful because of WoW, but the coup that Valve pulled was one of the biggest anti-corporate badass moves I have ever seen in my lifetime (I'm 25 atm).

Because of that coup, Valve and Steam have my respect permanently.

I was more refering to new releases rather than games that have been out for awhile getting price drops. Its obviously one of those "to each their own" type of situations. I'm not at all against digital distribution, I just perfer D2D or Impulse over Steam to be completely honest.

I just hope Bioware is able to sort out the social site issues by the time I get my copy tomorr..er this morning. I was looking forward to unlocking not only shale and her/his questline, but unlocking all the C.E items and snagging Warden's Keep right out of the gate for my first play through.

Fair enough, but I just prefer Steam over D2D because they are forthright about DRM.  D2D on more than one occation has not and will not state what DRM a game will carry beyond their initial key-check.  Steam will state clearly if a game does or does not have 3rd party DRM.

I got burned bad by D2D with Mirror's Edge and had to null my HDD to get that filth off my computer.

Yes looks like the uk version won't unlock until about 5pm UK time, I would have been playing quicker if I nipped to the shop at lunchtime and got it......Just don't get why they'd do that it will be on sale at retail at 9am.

It is because digital retailers sell to different timezones. If they were to unlock it at midnight, which country/state/timezone should they pick. By having it in the middle of day most timezones have actually changed date.

Well the UK is only in one time zone & since the UK version has it's on release date steam really should be able to release it on time. As it is I will be playing about 6 hours later than I thought because of steam release presumably at EAs instistance so high street retailers would feel they hadn't been short changed.

Well the Digital version for the UK is fully downloaded and on my drive and Steam says it will be unlocked on 6th November. Considering I have the game already, i wonder what possible reason they have for such a delay.

You would think digital releases do away with that sort of none sense, guess we are still in the stone age where digital releases are concerned.

Hmmm... well I don't think it's acceptable or understandable.

One of the major strengths of digital distribution is that, with pre-loading, customers get the product before those who get physical copies. Having the game unlock defeats the purpose of the pre-load (except for those with slow connections). The digital distributors should be quite practised in their unlocking system by now.

Would make more sense to me if they just unlocked it at midnight, local time, on the release dates. With the caveat that they are not going to be able to fix technical problems outside of their office hours.

This is especially true for those with later release dates - they will have been through the unlocking procedure for DAO, already...

I am amazed at how poorly digital distribution is handled, even by the best of them. It has so much potential...

If they just let you play it now, the physical shops wouldn't be happy. At all.

I know it's annoying, and I'm sure they know it's annoying, but they've got to keep all their retailers happy.

Yeah, they don´t dream off selling such rip-offs "sales" as an actually sale. It may be true if you´re paying in dollars, but if you live in Europe their prices are just crap.

I've never quite understood people's love of Valve or that filthy DRM encrusted app Steam to be honest. What I find even more humorous is when someone writes a long rant about DRM and how evil it is, then goes on to say "Thats why I use steam" which is about as DRM as you can get in the first place.

We love steam, because D2D is even more DRM ridden, Gamersgate and Gamershell have rather limited selections, we don't have to worry about broken discs, the community features, and the fact that it's just convenient. In addition, the DRM's people normally rant about are proven to mess with your computer in ways it should not, or has limited activations. It also doesn't take up much more in system resources than a simple instant messenger, which it has built in, and can be used while playing your games to boot.

I think you just proved his point. Ignoring bugs steam has to be one of the worst DRMs for messing with your computer/games in a way it shouldn't. Not only does it install itself to run at startup without your permission, but it doesn't give you any choice where to install your games and puts them in a nonstandard folder, and pops up it's dreaded overlay in every game you buy from it with no way to turn it off unless you wish to cripple functionality in your valve games.

p.s. I think you meant GamersGate and Impulse there, Gamershell doesn't sell games as far as I'm aware. I can't say I've noticed the 'limited selection' on GG compared to Steam. Most of the omissions are missing from both and while it does lack some games that steam has, it also has some games that steam lacks.

heh, ~6 hrs till unlock, and only 7.2% of the preload completed.

really should have checked more frequently for that preload option in steam.

oh well. lets just hope they don't screw up the Digital Deluxe Edition part, and i spend a month digging down in Bioware-Steam-EA support submenus for ways to figure out if it's DDE enabled.

Realistically you could begin unlock at 4AM PST and this would be a midnight or later release all across the US. While Valve is almost certainly contracted to an unlock time (or more likely a window that says no sooner than this or later than that) none of us know what it is and it could very well be midnight EST. I harbor a suspicion that the go to work make coffee, line up ducks, unlock  theory may very well hold water.
