Anyone remember an old game called Star Control? Some have said the ME3 ending was cribbed from Deus Ex, but I got a real star control vibe from it, especially with the grandfather talking to the little child. At the end of the first or second Star Control, the big bad enemy basically defeats the good Alliance, and slave-shields their homeworlds, basically reducing the once proud starfaring races to prisoners on their own planets cut off from the rest of the galaxy. Like a century or two later, a small human colony that went unoticed develops the first starfaring ship in ages, and sets about discovering the fate of the homeworld, which unintentionally ignites a revolution that leads to the slave-shielded worlds of the old allience overcoming their slave-shields, talking to the stars again, and overturning the rule of the baddies.

Oddly, the mass effectg endining kinda has this vibe to it.
