Ambiguous/Bleak Endings That You DID Like

Just what it sounds like.  ITT, post a story / novel / game / movie whathaveyou with an ambiguous and/or bleak ending that nonetheless left you feeling satisfied.  Then explain why you think, DESPITE its ambiguity and bleakness, it still worked, for purposes of comparison to ME3.

I'll start.

Samuel Delany's "Dhalgren" is probably the greatest work of science fiction novel I've ever read, despite an ending for which "amibiguous" is an understatement.

The narrative loops back on itself.  The last sentence of the novel is half a sentence -- the FIRST half of a sentence, actually, to which the first line of the novel is the conclusion. The final chapter, and indeed this single line, cast the entire narrative in a new light, while remaining consistent to metatextual devices which have been established throughout.  The ending drives home the theme of the novel, affirms the power and uniqueness of the setting, concludes the story of every main character in a satisfying and thematically consistent fashion, and yes, leaves us wanting more.

And is still fiction which is "Important," with a capital I.

Memento was fairly profound. It does lose a little of its excitement in reviewings, but there are a lot of details you can focus on catching. :) The last scene left my mind a little blown, tbh.

Thanks for making this Clive Owen fan want to break into the nearest rent-a-movie place at 5 am to rewatch it. Jerk. :(

Red Dead Redemption. One of the biggest downer endings ever in a video game, and yet thematically consistent with the rest of the game in a way that made it work the way ME3's ending doesn't.

Man, all this talking up I've been doing of this game these days... I think I'm going to go play RDR again. :)

Bastion was quite well-done.

"Childhoods End" by Arthur Clarke was one of the only SF novels that emotionally affected me so much that I was in tears at the end of it.

Humanity is destroyed... (Ascended... same difference...) One human watches the destruction...

Hrm... sounds a little familiar. The difference was Clarke foreshadowed it well and had actually interesting characters in the world...

Total Recall. I still don't know if it was real or not!
Final Fantasy X. The hero sacrificed himself to break the cycle. :(

I actually really liked the fairly ambigious ending to The Matrix Revolutions, though I'm probably in the minority.

I felt it was a sacrifice ending done right, unlike.......

In Bruges is one of my favorite movies. Ever.

I also really enjoyed Madoka Magica, even though I'm not big on anime. I think it had the perfect mixture of sacrifice and payoff.

My two favorite endings of all time:

Master and Commander
The Thing (1982)

Which worked for both those movies. Not ME3.

Agreed, I just watched that.

I'd also add the finale of Six Feet Under.

We Have a Pope. The whole movie sets itself up for a saccharine hollywood ending and then BAM.

It had more than one ending, but Bladerunner. The one that just ends with Deckard and Rachel running off together.

"It's too bad she won't live! But then again, who does?"

Panzer Dragoon Saga. The ending worked because it explained enough for you to understand what happened, and even though it was a dark ending it fits the actual game.

Pretty much anything by Philip K. Dick. Once I read one his stories and it had a happy ending, and I was actually pretty ticked.

Also, good horror movies that always have that classic "it's not over yet" before the credits.
