I think the OP believes an RPG should be more like Fallout 3 or that Oblivion game where it is an open world where you can kill monsters, decide what gear you ware, buy and sell and so on.
But I think most of us here are happy for buying a game with a rich story, rather than just an open world for you to interact in, I think this is the difference, and a the point where the communication breaks down.
Wow, an intelligent response. Most here don't seem to know what RPG stands. The R stands for ROLE. As in playing a role in a game which you do in all the games I mentioned, whether they are are action, group or whatever.
You are correct partly. By words, you can
indeed interpret the meaning of RPG that way, however, in today’s gaming
culture, an RPG would means more than that just a little bit, it has a criteria
of a strong direction of story, as well as other elements to support the game
as an RPG. Game such as Diablo, or Resident Evil would not truly considered as
RPGs even though you are playing a role in their game worlds.
Another thing is that, gaming culture wise, Black isle/ Bioware has made a revolutionary
master piece named Baldur’s Gate in early 90s, which has set as an example of
how immersive story can be interpreted into computer games, and the background/
influence of such master piece is of course, from DnD; those board games where
you play with a great degree of story telling, making the story and the choices
you make in both action and dialogue highly significant and have set as a
standard of what RPG fans would look for.
A lot of Dragon Age fan here would demand/
expect the same.
I think that is the reason why you did not
enjoy the game as much as others.
