To think that a piece of entertainment could actually depress a person is incredibly sad. The ending is... well, it is what it is.

But to engender feelings of anguish and despair, leaving you shaking your fists in rage? Seriously? It may be a stereotype to say this, but... you know. Go outside. Foster relationships with actual people. Soak up some sunshine. It's just a videogame. If you feel it is more than that, consider reevaluating your lifestyle, because you've lost yourself in a fantasy world.

It's more than just a video game cause of the emotional attachment

Im glad you are here to enlighten us on the wrongdoings of our lives with you condescending holier than thou and bloated rhetoric. Its not at all inflammatory or patronizing.

Obviously you don't understand how much effort people have put into these games, immersing them into the story hoping for an ending that would actually reward them for their hard work. How dare you criticise people, telling them to go outside! You have no right!

Have you ever cried during a tv show or a movie? Or a book?

If not you live a very sad emotionless life. If so, then you should probably leave your own topic.

And to add to that the promises that were made while marketing

To qualify my statements, I've played all three games (I started on the
X-Box 360, then switched to the PC, so I've actually bought Mass Effect 1
twice ;). I do realize the interest in seeing the trilogy conclude.

The outcry over the ending strikes me as absurd and histrionic. Your assertion that I'm being patronizing is false. I'm simply urging people to "get a life". To see grown persons act this way towards their electronic friends and space waifus is disturbing. Forgive me for pouring salt in your wound.

Personally, I'm living a pretty cool life with rainbows and sunshine and heart-warming melody all the way. Hardly anything made me cry the last few years, but hell, this game did it. And I won't blame my life for that - I praise the creators instead. Brilliant piece.

If it weren't a story driven game in which people put over 100 hours of emotional investment (per playthrough) then I would agree. However with the amount of investment, being rewarded with the bigged fail ending in the history of video games (yes I honestly believe this) and being fed blatant lies by the developers (they downright said there would be NO A,B or C endings) I think the controversy is very much justified.

It does not justify personal attacks on BioWare employees however. I've never done this myself nor would I ever do this so I won't take responsibility for this fact.

It is just a videogame. Granted. But what makes you so sure that anyone who isn't happy with the endings never goes outside or has any friends?

I seriously doubt most people are depressed about the endings.

Complaining about something and being depressed about it aren't quite the same thing. If I take a walk and it stars raining while I don't have an umbrella, I might come back complaining about the weather, but I'm not going to off myself over it.

I'm sure if you bought something and you didn't get what was advertised or you didn't feel you got what you paid for you would be up in arms as well, the phrase "you get what you pay for" has been allowed to be turned false by corporations who would gladly replace it with "You pay for what we give you, and more than what it's worth".

'It is what it is' is the concession of critical thought.

When will people realise using the "it's just a video game" excuse doesn't work anymore? I mean it's quite obvious video games can have quite an effect on people, to try and belittle it is just wrong.

In the scheme of things, how Mass Effect ended isn't very important.

So you mean to tell me that you've never had any kind of emotional reaction to a book game film or tv show?

What is your favourite story? In any of those mediums? How would you feel if that story ended in a way that disregarded many of the themes of the story, had the main character act in a way that made no sense given their history, and then refused to give you any kind of closure when it had been constantly stated that it would give you closure?

How would you feel if they did that to your favourite story?

If you still don't get it then I can't help you.

In your eagerness to twist my words, you misread my intent. This thread is my dismay at seeing so many people so... distressed by a videogame's resolution. "Get a life" was not meant to be insulting. The quotations and the phrase was meant to be a concise summary of a previous post.

Heh, I tried to get to the bottom of this elsethread without much success.

I highly doubt anybody has developed any kind of mental illness from this ending- upset perhaps, but to push it to mental illness-levels is either hamming it up or a side-effect of an underlying issue.

Of course... but those feelings are usually spawned by comparisons to real world companions being in the same situation. Not the characters themselves.

I've read threads in here where people have confessed being truly and deeply depressed. There's something wrong with your outlook on life that you'll let a videogame effect you that way.

well i'm more miffed that i spent 80 bux and 30-40 hrs for an ending that left me going "wah?"

it's like watching the latest GhostRider movie and coming out of it shaking your fists wishing you had your 2 hours and 10 bux back. but life goes on.
