They had quoted the game as "your story" while advertising. False advertising is the reason most of them are complaining. The other reason is emotional attachment.

Your story within limits. You decide whether Shepard or the geth lives or dies, you decide whether the krogan raise again or remain shackled by genophage. In ME2 you also decide whether the Collector base is destroyed or given to Cerberus, you can't do anything you want with it.

Choice within limits.

Well we don't know the outcome yet since all of them are stuck on earth. Please explain this

To think that a piece of entertainment could actually depress a person is incredibly sad. The ending is... well, it is what it is.

But to engender feelings of anguish and despair, leaving you shaking your fists in rage? Seriously? It may be a stereotype to say this, but... you know. Go outside. Foster relationships with actual people. Soak up some sunshine. It's just a videogame. If you feel it is more than that, consider reevaluating your lifestyle, because you've lost yourself in a fantasy world.

You have no soul.

A little harsh, don't you think?

People allready have asserted that Playters have that right. They have done it before. Not just with major writers in history, but bio themselves have recognized that one of their own products was so crap it needed to be "revisited". Its not a first. Not even for Bioware.

It's different. Deception was full of inconsistencies and lore mistakes from cover to cover, unabling readers to enjoy over 90% of it. Here, people are arguing to change one small part of the game because they didn't like it.

The endings were poorly done and had holes, but they didn't change already established lore.

Harshness in response to harshness.

There's still a positive precedent.

You serious? The game gave you the options to save the galaxy, which you obviously did if Stargazer is alive. What happened to the galaxy later is left to your imagination. Hundreds of stories end that way, without explaining the entire aftermath.

Thank you for your feedback! Can you tell me what you like about the Retake Mass Effect movement?

Fair enough, but still I doubt it makes the guy soulless. Remember, this isn't calling people out for feeling emotion, it's calling out the whole 'Bioware ruined my life/I don't want to get out of bed in the morning/I have self-diagnosed myself with clinical depression because of this game' melodrama.

I'd argue in his most raw form, he's right. If your life's being adversely affected by this narrative, there are most likely underlying issues that should be addressed. And if it's not, claiming it is is pretty stupid.

Perhaps there are. Their opinion is still valuable.

I admit I'm really depressed right now. Yes it's sad. I do go outside, but I'm too angry actually, this doesn't help. Mass Effect gave me so much emotion since ME1, it's only natural for me to be that affected with that kind of ending. I was not only playing ME, I was living it, it fed me emotionnally. Now call me nerds, nolife or what else it doesn't matter

-Wrong. From the very intro of ME3 there are inconsistencies and lore mistakes. It gets better during the game, but you are then consistently yanked from suspension of disbelief by bugs (getting reset to lvl1 was my favorite) and dialogue you have zero controll over, plus a plethora of other things. And the more I got yanked away, the more I looked for mistakes. I wasnt "playing as shepard". I was "observing shepard" and looking for errors. Go to the tech support pages. There are bugs up the kazoo. The only reason the bugs havent been mentioned more is because the endings overshadows everything else. Even if the endings had been ok, this game would STILL have come under intense critizism.

The ending violated lore by being completely illogical (insert "so I heard you dont like synthetics.jpg" here) and by introducing in the last minute a character that has not at all been hinted at and a character you cannot disagree with. You have to "obey" with zero elaboration into why. You are pidgeonholed into selecting an end that is only cosmetically different from the two others. And its not "16" endings. Its not even "select a colour". Its just lazy and inane.

You're not alone, though you probably won't get a sympathetic hearing here. Go to the spoilers section. There are quite a few "we are depressed" threads where you can get some support. *hugs*

People have invested hundreds of hours and dollars into this series and were expecting a satisfying conclusion to Shepard's story and the stories of the other characters. And sadly, the ending not only failed to deliver. It failed massively. It didn't conclude anything, raised a billion questions that may never answered, and creates huge plotholes that invalidated the story of the first and second games. So I can see why people are insulted and demanding the ending be changed. Because everyone here knows the writers at Bioware are much more capable at writing a story than that.

Though I doubt they will actually change the ending (and if they did. I won't buy it.) but I think the fans are at least owed an apology for the ending as it is.

Remember 10 years ago when the first rumours were spouted about video games and violent/suicidal behavioue in teens ?

All the affected teens shouted "no way"

Now just take a look at any cosplay crowd.

It used to sicken me,but now i rsome people will fixate on anything that takes them away from thier drudgery.
so i suppose in a way its a good thing.
For some people video games are their only hope, its sad but true.

me i like fishing and 3d design more than gaming,so i guess i am lucky.

if youthink gaming is bad for people take a look at all the reality shows and the ones desperate to appear on out tv`s even if only yo be abused and used as a circus act

If the ending made any sense and explained many wtf moments and plot holes that the ending created........then it wouldnt be a problem to me.

But it doesnt, its a confusing and nonsensical ending which makes it controversial.

Getting invested in a story isn't wrong, or weird. Yes, some fans will take it too far. But it is very understandable that people would get upset about this ending. It's unsatisfying.

People have emotional bonds to books. The most famous of these books and the most commercially successfull is called "the Bible". Now, go and tell everyone they shouldnt have an emotional attatchement to some paper pages.

I don't get it, what makes Video Games exempt from emotional attachment, where Film, literature and music are allowed that?

IE, Original Post is stupid and bias. Games are allowed the same level of emotional attachment as any other art.

That is bull****. Have you ever read a book and felt related to some of the protagonists? Did you feel anger or sadness when your favorite character died? Books, movies and even video games are means of entertainment, that is correct. But they are supposed to create feelings, it is not just about telling a story, it is all about emotions and that is a good thing. Entertainment without emotions is worthless. I can't imagine any movie, book, or game i liked, which wasn't able to make me feel something. May it be joy, sadness, or anything else.

I never read the Harry Potter books, but i know a lot of people who were really sad about the deaths of special characters. But they were happy as well because the story was able to fascinate them and to produce these feelings. The ending of mass effect 3 is exactly the same as reading a seriesof books and the author decided to create a crappy ending that not just does not make any sense, no, it is ridiculous and negates anything you've read in all that books.

Saying someone is mentally ill because he felt related to a game resp. its story is stupid. It is exactly what a game is supposed to do.

Wrong. First, bugs have nothing to do with our discussion and you know how many of those I encountered during my detailed playthrough - 1. Something weird in cutscene on Mars, with Liara's head. That's it.
Also, lore mechanics of ME universe haven't changed,I looked a little at your link,Anderson is no longer a Councilor because of the events of Retribution, dialogue choices are dumbed down but that doesn't interfere with the lore of the story. Previous two games had more plotholes than ME3.

The ending violated lore by being completely illogical (insert "so I heard you dont like synthetics.jpg" here) and by introducing in the last minute a character that has not at all been hinted at and a character you cannot disagree with. As they are machines without emotion, their logic does indeed make sense. They wipe out advanced life so that other cultures can rise and start another cycle. Other synthetics might destroy all organic life, advanced and primitive. Starchild was hinted by Sovereign and Rannoch Reaper as something beyond our comprehension, which is actually not but Reapers believed it is. And if Shepard could convince it to stop doing what he has been doing for millions of years with such certainty...
Also, there is a big difference between the endings,BioWare just got a little lazy at showing it. Big deal.
