I really believe that romance makes any heroic fantasy, and it's something that has been largely overlooked in video games until recently.. I LOVED the way DA:O incorporated it, very close to perfect IMO. From what I have seen, the romance element in ME3 is also good as long as you romanced a character from ME1, but I never felt any of those characters were in Shepard's league. Samara, on the other hand, was perfect, but sadly not available. Miranda ran a close second IMO so my Shepard romanced her.
I was not really satisfied with the way the romance played out in ME2 for them, basically they confessed physical attraction for each other and then had sex. I was really looking forward to the relationship deepening and maturing in ME3. While I realize that people who romanced other ME2 characters (all of whom seem now to have been placed in the story for no other reason than to test the players loyalty to the ME1 characters) got treated much worse than I did, I was still disappointed to see nothing more than the characters have sex again and them express deep concern for each others' safety. Not exactly poetry in my book. At the end, my Shepard saw Joker, Anderson and LIARA (and BOY am I tired of getting her rammed down my throat in every game) apparently Miranda was no more than a roll in the sack to him. I wanted Aragorn and Arwen, or Romeo and Juliet if it had to be tragic. I got Flavor Flav and Brigitte Nielsen.
I played ME1 twice and ME2 five times, but I can't seem to drum up the desire to play through ME3 a second time. I kind of feel like a bait and switch was pulled on me, spending two games crafting a character and then having that character redfined for me at the 11th hour. Here's looking forward to some really impressive DLCs...
