Well I've had some great teams that perform amazingly well without a mic. If I could, I'd use mine, but I just moved and it got lost somewhere in the move. Or so I was told. I think someone stole it, but whatever happened, it's gone and I haven't felt the need to buy another one... yet.

That said, it helps to not get yourself so focused on a target that you can't be aware of what's around you. On Silver and above I am constantly aware of my surroundings. Of course there are times when I'm running cross-map from a brute or banshee (I'm a drell adept, k?) or I see a ravager that has a teammate in their sights, and I want to warn them... but, it is what it is. Just gotta be aware.

Mics can make things easier though, as long as people aren't just talking needlessly and being a distraction.

No, I don't need a mic.

I also don't need other people to make sure I don't die.

Didn't use it on ME until today. I'd been playing Saints Row The Third with a friend so I had my headset left on and coughed into it at one point, someone else was like "OMG ANOTHER MIC FINALLY" so I figured why not. Was pretty useful especially when the banshees and brutes started appearing. Gonna use it from now on when I get the opportunity.

There's a reason I have such a HUGE preference for local multiplayer games, whether it's splitscreen, system link, or LAN party. Borderlands and Halo (all of them) got tons of playtime because of local.

No problems with getting kicked, no problems with people abusing mics or not having mics. That, and a mic still doesn't do as well for coordinating as actually being all together.

I don't know about you, but I play just fine without a mic.
It's not a necessity.

Lots of mic shy people in this game, sadly.

I'm one of those people and I prefer to use my mic on Mumble with friends as opposed to calling out every enemy I see on the map. To be honest I can't really see where I NEED a mic to play this game online and enjoy myself when the only thing you really need is some situational awareness and a modicum of skill. A vast majority of the games I play on silver I end up winning without someone saying a word the entire time. I've seen people talking to each other in-game trying to work as a team and you know what? That didn't stop them from constantly going down on silver. The day I need to use my mic to to play Mass Effect 3 online is the day I quit the online forever. Until that day comes I'm going to keep on carrying silver games with my mic set to "mute". /rant.

If you want to weed out the silent players, just ask in the lobby if anyone else is on the mic. If you get no reply, leave. I did this for a while, and over time I amassed a good bunch of mic-blessed friends. Now I don't need to play with silent strangers anymore.

I like to watch TV, listen to podcasts, radio, music, or do something else that makes noise while playing games on my computer. I even mute ME3 because I can't be assed to listen to the random, largely unintelligible noises people sometimes make.

The only ones I'm interested in talking to online are my friends, anyone else will have to do with text or nothing at all, which in ME3 apparently means nothing at all because they don't seem to know how to design a PC game.

For the record it seems some of you are oblivious to how things are. 1 out of every 8 ppl speak in ME3.

I'm very capable of playing this game without a mic, since no one uses them anyway.

but....FACT: there are times when they woud help. FACT: you're lying if you say you never die by suprise.

Have a little more respect for the rest of us and not insult our intelligence by saying otherwise.

If I could find an affordable and comfy headset that actually lasted more then a few months then maybe.

The way things are looking now I don't think I'll have any luck until wireless headsets become more popular... seriously, cheap-ass wires can go to hell.

I agree 100% with the OP. Gold matches sans mic are frustrating, irritating, and ultimately unlikely to succeed. If you want to play a team game online, learn to communicate like a team.

@OP:
Your claim that "I'm sorry....but you need a mic" is nothing but personal opinion.

Many many people have successfully extracted on gold and silver without a mic, so it's not necessary to have a mic.

So please stop telling us that your opinion is a FACT.

If a mic could be useful is another discussion entirely. I do not think so, but that is my opinion.

And where do you get your 1 in 8 statistic from? I've played a little over 100 matches and have had exactly 5 people that used a mic.

I don't think you need a mic. There are some situations when a mic helps coordinate teamwork.

In bronze games I would never bother with a mic, its not needed as long as everyone understands how the game works, nice and easy.

Equally i've been on teams in silver who have coordinated brilliantly without a mic, you need situational awareness to complete silver but a mic is simply a bonus. In my experience good players cover each others back and cooperate without having to tell each other what to do and are constantly keeping track of enemies and team mates, no need for shouts. Team players are team players with or without mics, the problem I usually have on silver is with players running off on their own, not bothering with objectives or reviving and to be honest, I don't think barking orders down a mic at them will change that.

Broadly speaking on silver, you can get on fine without a mic. I do find it easier when i'm playing with a group of friends with mics but on balance i'd rather play a silent silver run and risk being blindsided than talk to random gamers, some of the peopleon xbox live are very nice, some aren't so I tend to keep the chat to people I actually know. Perhaps a bit antisocial but its the way i preffer to play.

I wouldn't try gold silent, for me it's too hard to play silent so I tend to keep that to groups of 4 people I actually know, with mics on.

I'm not talking about those matches with 4 ppl with 3 Widows X and 1 Claymore X.  You're purposely forgetting those matches where the ppl are still new and don't know squat or just here for the fun of it.

Not everyone is leetsnacks.

Realistically, I'm not saying a mic is needed is a fact, I'm saying the facts are what I said they were in my last post.

Honestly if you're getting Blind sided by something as large and noisy as a brute you were likely to fail anyways.

You don't need one. And frankly, the mic users I've played with were some of the most obnoxious people ever.

Nobody HAS TO use the mic, but at least having an option to say something if necessary can be an advantage.

Turret kills Private Ryan.
Rambo kills million enemies with rocket launcher, scrolling the message window.
[Tom Hanks tries to run and revive Private Ryan]
Turret kills Tom Hanks.

If Private Ryan said a few words like "watch out for the turret" or "damn turret", Tom Hanks would be still alive and the mission could still be saved. I really can't believe that saying few simple words (you don't even have to know English very well, don't even have to build complete sentences, srsly!) can be so complicated.

And being shy? Are you shy to say "excuse me" when you want to get off the bus? No? So you are not shy to let people know face-to-face that you're about to leave the vehicle, but you are too shy to say "geth prime on the ramp" when playing the game with people you'll never meet, that will never have any impact on your life whatsoever?

Oh - and you hate your voice over the mic? Who doesn't hate their own voice? I bet most people don't give a damn about your sex, age or if your voice sounds funny. Just a few words that might change the outcome of a game can be useful. Or at least having an option to say them when it's absolutely needed (like telling the last player alive that reviving you under the turret is a bad idea).

In most game with at least 2 people using the voice communication the results were much better then with a team of mute fishes.

Gold is easier with a mic, but can be done without one by a team that has an understanding (simply by being good players, and of course playing together if they've done so). Silver or below, simply doesn't make a difference compared to quality of players at hand.

If you dont have a mic, then having a team of players you know well is the next best thing you can have. But having both communication AND well known players is a Win - Win situation.

Communication is vital. But also knowing how your team mates play are vital as well.

I've done gold and silver many times without a mic, if you are paying attention to what is going around you a mic isn't that necessary.

So are mics helpful: yes they are
Do you really need one?? no you don't
