Nobody HAS TO use the mic, but at least having an option to say something if necessary can be an advantage.

Turret kills Private Ryan.
Rambo kills million enemies with rocket launcher, scrolling the message window.

Turret kills Tom Hanks.

If Private Ryan said a few words like "watch out for the turret" or "damn turret", Tom Hanks would be still alive and the mission could still be saved. I really can't believe that saying few simple words (you don't even have to know English very well, don't even have to build complete sentences, srsly!) can be so complicated.

And being shy? Are you shy to say "excuse me" when you want to get off the bus? No? So you are not shy to let people know face-to-face that you're about to leave the vehicle, but you are too shy to say "geth prime on the ramp" when playing the game with people you'll never meet, that will never have any impact on your life whatsoever?

Oh - and you hate your voice over the mic? Who doesn't hate their own voice? I bet most people don't give a damn about your sex, age or if your voice sounds funny. Just a few words that might change the outcome of a game can be useful. Or at least having an option to say them when it's absolutely needed (like telling the last player alive that reviving you under the turret is a bad idea).

In most game with at least 2 people using the voice communication the results were much better then with a team of mute fishes.

Well actually there are people too shy to say excuse me to get off a bus, not everyone who plays online games is a perfectly healthy social human being.

"In most game with at least 2 people using voice communication the results were much better than with a team of mute fishes."  That is untrue if one of the people with a mic is a douche relaying orders like he knows what he's doing when it's not even needed, frustrating the other players. Tbh it shouldn't be hard to just watch eachother's backs instead of having to yell out everything every five seconds.

Yeah once had an absolute friggin idiot who decided to start abusing us for dying because we wouldn't be getting the waves-survived medals. I would've quit the match except it was around wave 7 already and it was pretty clear we'd beat it (this was in silver). Quit as soon as we got back to the lobby. Deeply unpleasant fellow. Glad mostly people who talk aren't like that.

well i dont use a mic because i do not own one, in all honesty im not going to buy a mic for 1 game even if its a cheap mic, its true that teamwork works better when people talk but sticking together and not running off into diffrent direction helps just as much, that plus something called common sense enemies wont be coming to you from 1 direction only so regardless of anything you should be constantly looking around to see whats happening, if your side is clear you can just give a kick glimps to the direction your partners are shooting at, kicking people for not having a mic only proves how simple minded you are i respect your opinion OP but people can work as a team even without mics

Mics are pointless on XBL mostly because people just ignore what you say anyway.

Actually the worst thing about trying to use voice chat on XBL is the fact that it will show they have a mic, but it seems in most instances they're actually in a live party, so they can't hear you anyway.

I always have my headset on while playing but usually keep it muted until there's a situation where I need to say something. There have been matches when voice chat has come in very handy. Then there have been matches where I would have liked to have taken a player's mic and broken it into pieces and shoved it down his throat. Some people are absolutely shameless in their anonymity.

I stopped trying. If I don't play with my regular team, I'm usually Mic-less. No point in telling people information they'll ignore. Plus I tend to curse the progenators of my teammates very loudly, and very often.

Absolutely nobody talks on PC. Seriously, maybe 1% of my games have people using voice comms.

Why? Because the damn game is broken for tons of people and their mics won't work. Mic works fine in Ventrilo, Mumble, Teamspeak, Skype, everything, but nope, not in ME3.

@OP:
Your claim that "I'm sorry....but you need a mic" is nothing but personal opinion.

Many many people have successfully extracted on gold and silver without a mic, so it's not necessary to have a mic.

So please stop telling us that your opinion is a FACT.

If a mic could be useful is another discussion entirely. I do not think so, but that is my opinion.

And where do you get your 1 in 8 statistic from? I've played a little over 100 matches and have had exactly 5 people that used a mic.

I'm not talking about those matches with 4 ppl with 3 Widows X and 1 Claymore X.  You're purposely forgetting those matches where the ppl are still new and don't know squat or just here for the fun of it.

Not everyone is leetsnacks.

Realistically, I'm not saying a mic is needed is a fact, I'm saying the facts are what I said they were in my last post.

Oh man, get a hold of yourself. Must be loads of "leetsnacks" out there. Been running Silver Reapers "mute" with people armed with Avenger IIIs and Mantis IVs. Good weapons mean nothing if you are too stupid to notice a brute behind you without telling you.

But I guess we shouldn't confuse you with arguments because you know your Opinion is fact...

Playing with people with mics does suck but that is kind of why the forums is here to find players to play with, with mics right? Why complain about it when you can easily remedy it in the same place? Plus it's hit and miss it's the same thing with most fps there are a bunch of people without mics plus most people with mics are annoying. Like me :D!

I know this has been a constant topic here, but anyway....

Thinking everyone that plays online games is going to be annoying....until you meet those that aren't one after another.....is 1) not healthy and 2) hindering a MULTIPLAYER game.

It's such a pain to be blind sided by a Brute or something that someone could have warned me about.

No one is asking you to become deep in conversation with total strangers....but it would be nice to have teammates riather than mute pros.

I don't care if you're so good that you can carry a team without a mic.  I'd rather have 4 guys with a mic saying "Brute coming up the stairs!!!" or "Banshee on my ass, help!!!".

Why?  B/c eventhough you might carry a team...it's not fun covering a direction and thinking your teammates are right behind you doing the same in another direction only to find out that 1 or 2 or 3 ran off when 2 Brutes and a Ravenger came around the corner...only to be pummeled.

Edit: I 'm more or less talking about the PC.  I haven't been on LIVE in forever so I don't know what the community is like.

I play on XBox Live and this is my favorite post on the Citadel. lol.

Mics make the game SO MUCH EASIER. It's amazing! Mics also come with the xbox so I don't really why peeps wouldn't use it. Only time I don't use it is when playing Borderlands or something like that because there tends to be alot of 12 year old kids who play that and like to scream in my ear. I have yet to have that problem with ME3.

Watch your back. It takes all of...less than a second to do a complete 360 of your environment. If a Brute sneaks up on you, it's more than likely your fault by not keeping situational awareness (relying on others to help you isn't the best thing because they won't always be there). Much easier to check your back than the flanks on the far sides (which I find is the main game killer on Wave 10), but if you have a team that just knows what to do, you'll be fine.

Incidentally, I have autism, so I'll never use voice chat (unable to find words promptly; it's either talk or play, and I'll choose play, thank you). I've won plenty of Silver games over the weekend challenge without bother.

I'm just speaking from my experience with mic users, they're either nice or annoyingly controlling no offence to you lol.

Yes I have a mild form of autism as well so I understand where you're coming from, even when I have a mic it's pretty difficult to just start talking.  I can usually only do it with friends ive gotten used to speaking to.

I leave lobbies if someone is heaving over a mic, I only give mic advice which is almost always ignored during the most dire of situations such as the wipe at wave 10 I just had.

Hard to disagree that some people tend to be utter idiots when allowed to speak freely without revealing their personal details or faces, ok. And yes, some people might perhaps have some sort of impairment that makes it hard to talk to strangers, it happens. And yes, being quiet is better than being a douche, but there is nothing wrong with any meaningful comments or notes. So if someone can, they should consider opening their mouth once in a while if it might change the outcome. Sorry to put people having problems talking with people who should never be allowed to talk in one group, but this group is just minority.

Personally I don't see anything wrong if someone tries to command, especially in harder situations when noone wants to leave the place/to guard the other way/can't coordinate properly with combos etc. - unless they do it in a rude way or with some stupid elitist approach (omg u nubz y no guard teh ramp?). Giving some quick pointers can be useful and beneficial. Hell, sometimes I do give some suggestions myself when I feel they're needed and I believe my judgement of situation is correct. It's just some people that get mad when being given an advice.

^THIS

Especially when you try to explain to them that you're using Sabotage & you're hacking the Geth so don't kill them. They never ever listen. They just run around like crazy trying to kill everything as fast as possible as if it were some kind of race.

The co-op was balanced with player communication in mind. I don't understand why people refuse to communicate honestly. Usually makes for a better experience.
