You hate the ending because it's not a happy ending or because it doesn't make any sense?

I hate it for both reasons actually. I hate that the ending throws all the themes and lore that they established right out the window. I also hate the fact that it turned my crew of fiercely loyal team mates into a bunch of cowards as they ran away from earth and left me there. But I also do hate the fact that there was no option for a happy ending. It just annoys me that the possibility of a good ending doesn't even exist. Reviewer Jeremy Jahns said it best and I quote "And for God's sake, give us a good ending. I understand that the common belief is that in epics like this the hero has to die, but the phrase "the hero has to" anything in a game like Mass Effect that's built around choice and picking your own destiny, it goes against everything that Mass Effect is all about. If someone plays good for the entire game then they should earn a good ending."

My only gripe with the ending is that it doesn't make sense. I think ending with Shepard either dying, or surviving but being separated from many of his closest friends is appropriate considering that the series has always been about him making personal sacrifices for the sake of the galaxy. It's just the execution of the ending that was terrible, a bittersweet ending was appropriate, but BioWare really dropped the ball when actually writing it.

It makes no sense.

However - according to the 'offical Poll' someone did here on the forums, 80% people wanted a happy ending more than one that made sense, which I think is a shame since I'd rather have an unhappy ending that made sense than a happy one which didn't either.

I think the poll you mentioned is either the often quoted one, that acknowledges that is worded wrongly or some other poll that only has two options, happy and current.

i hate the ending because it destroyed emotional investment in the story and characters. One second i am sitting on the edge of my chair, listening to last word of Anderson with misty eyes (and i am an "old" guy), next seconds i am asking myself wtf? And start scratching my head. The whole illusion coming crashing down around me, i "run" from one switch to another not knowing what to do because the "dialog" from befor with a space casper made no sense, provided options even less.

And in the end my hero commits suicide, no not a heroic sacrifice, but real suicide.

Well, yes... I hated the ending because it was "bad." Shocking, right?

But seriously, the ending was abrupt, lazy, and pasted on... Not to mention that all "choices" basically led to the same conclusion.

That's why people are angry... because if every choice leads you to the same end - then those choices were meaningless.

Both actually. I've linked my blog article in my signature addressing it if you want to see why.

In short: I started off in the "I just want an ending that makes sense" camp. Then as I gradually thought more about it I came around to agree with the comment in Angry Joe's video: why the hell NOT have a happy ending?

People call it childish to want a happy ending, but in the words of C. S. Lewis: "When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness".

Both. Happy endings are great.

Edit: And I would argue that dark endings are far too prevalent these days.  Too cliche'.  It's harder to be happy than it is to be sad.

This /\\

Depressing endings are becoming cliche now; a happy ending for everyone in the galaxy would actually be breaking the norm, and consequently, make a majority of fans happy

Worst part of this is that it's not "Sad ending for story purpose", it's more like "Sad ending for sake of Sad Ending, story be damned".

At a minimum, all they have to do to fix this for me is remove the damn starchild scene and give me three ending based entirely on my my EMS: One where everyone dies, one where the relays are destroyed, but some people survive (remove the Nomandy scene), and one where the Reapers are destroyed but the relays are not (best ending). That's all I need at this point.

ME3's endings were perfectly fine since BioWare had said that Shep is no more after this one so it is totally appropriate. Just saying, haters gonna hate.

Doesn't make sense, throws in new concepts and ideas and introduces new plot holes

Beating the Reapers is a happy ending IMO which is why I chose Destroy/Red but nearly EVERYTHING else was out of place. No closure, no clarification, so sense.

Because it does not follow the flow of the story. Would I like a happy ending, sure, but only if it followed the story. Sad or happy the end must connect all the lines the story laid down and this one does not. It became a new story with a new plot and a new character that never complete the original story.

Both.

Regardless if people wanted a somber ending or a happy ending it should have been there as well.

Usually for things like this you expected a much better epilogue sequence.

Really? I personally love bad endings because they are hard to come by. 95% of holliwood movies and 99% of games are good endings. Do we need more on the list?

On the other side, I agree the ending doesn't really make much sense to me.

What's your thoughts?

They are absurd and kill the whole ME universe. Here's why :

The questions in the poll you mention were deeply flawed. If you disliked the ending, the only real choice you could make was "I want a mega happy ending" to show you didn't like it.

I just want it to make sense, and would rather not arbitrarily destroy galactic civilization in order to save it. Don't care which characters live or die as long as it makes sense & serves the story well.

I loved that Shepard died. It gives the franchise meaning...which is then erased when we're not even shown something as basic as whether the rest of our squadmates are alive or dead.

Both.

But what most people dont realize is that were not asking for the endings to be forcibly changed to whatever. We just want a happy ending to be an option, along with what we have now for those who somehow liked it.

Mostly because there's no chance of a bit of happiness. This stems more from the impact on the Normandy's crew, particularly the LI (who will no doubt be utterly depressed afterwards; Tali at least sounds like she is speaking to her just before the final part). If it wasn't for the impact it had on them I would probably be OK with Shepard dying no matter what outcome. The bad, confusing mess just adds to it. A confusing, badly-written mess that wasn't depressing would've left me annoyed but not both annoyed and upset.

I've never got my head around why anyone wants misery, although a really upsetting one needs to be in there if you make a complete mess of the game to really hammer home the point of "Yep, you failed."

I think I'm more upset by the fact that the mass relays are destroyed, thereby stranding everybody in the Sol system, and also how I was denied any meaningful epilogue that depicts what happens to all the characters who survived the ordeal.
