You hate the ending because it's not a happy ending or because it doesn't make any sense?

i think a happy ending should be POSSIBLE, the point of mass effect was to write the story you want within the framework bioware gives you, from noble sacrifice over ULTIMATE SAVE EVERYONE to biggest jackass ever barely survives and gets everyone else killed.
what bugs me is that we get the framework A1 A1.1 and A1.2 whereas none of them end the story very differently and all of them were badly written (or stolen) and executed.
i want to have the option to let one of my squadmates die heroicly, die heroicly myself, heroicly safe everyone and walk out of there alive (see mass effect one ending) or utterly fail.
that is what i feel we were promised. (especially given the presedence set by me1 and 2)
bad endings happen more than often enough. the idea that you need to make one to be "different" is kind of idiotic since theres litterally thousands of stories out there that end that way.
keep true to your genre, which in MEs case was RPG. and i for one dont remember a single rpg that ended good/happily and got bad reviews for that reason alone (may be my fault, i only play like 1-2 rpgs per year tops). on the other hand bad/dark endings to rpgs can easily ruin the story and eliminate the replay value (e.g. mass effect 3).

so, im gonna go with both bugs me.

ME3's ending should be similar to ME2's ending, but all we got were pretty colors. Think of the colorblind, they only got 1 ending.

I just want an ending that makes sense. A sad ending that makes sense is far better than a nonsensical happy ending.

there a poll where 80% of people voted they disliked the ending because it wasn't a happy ending.

Really? I personally love bad endings because they are hard to come by. 95% of holliwood movies and 99% of games are good endings. Do we need more on the list?

On the other side, I agree the ending doesn't really make much sense to me.

What's your thoughts?

There are plenty of movies where the ending isn't "happy" but they are still great movies.  However, when I see such a film I say, "wow, great movie, but I never want to see it again."  I want to see an ending that provides hope for the future and at least some acknowledgement for the hero's sacrifice.  Plus, with a RPG, the hero is basically you since you control the decisions, dialog, skill development, etc.

So yeah, I want a happy ending.  But an ending that made sense would have been better.

You know, Halo got it right.  Fallout 3 got better, and Las Vegas wasn't bad.  I expected way more from Mass Effect.

Last point.  Why would I want to buy any more Mass Effect games or DLC?  What inspires me to play on?

I want both options. I think a happy ending should be available for those who earned it by having enough war assets or making the correct choices towards the end. Remember the "suicide" mission from Mass Effect 2? It was easy to lose people and some casualties were pretty much guaranteed by everyone you talk to but with the right choices and preparation you could have absolutely no casualties at all. You could go from having a bad ending were everyone dies, including Shepard, to having an a decent ending where a few people die or a perfect ending where everyone lives.

Then we get Mass Effect 3 where the galaxy is screwed, Shepard dies (although Shepard's sacrifice is actually pretty good, but the option to have an ending where Shepard lives should be available), your squad is stranded on a distant planet and potentially everyone on Earth dies because of having low war assets (the Destroy ending where it starts wiping out everyone fighting on the ground).

Not to mention all the various plot holes and ridiculous conclusions that are made in that last 15 minute stretch. All I can hope is that it is all a dream/hallucination brought on by Indoctrination. If the Indoctrination Theory is correct then I will drop the whole "Retake Mass Effect" thing and praise Bioware again for their masterful story telling. If it is taken literally I will never buy another Bioware again, including a proper sequel to KOTOR, if they don't amend these ******-poor endings.

I don't care if all of the Normandy's crew dies in a tragic explosion and Shepard turns into a husk...

I just want a logical ending that fits in the Mass Effect universe.

I dont think anyone expected happy things to unfold. It was always going to be bittersweet at best
