If the ending DESTROYS the entire franchise then it should literally be getting zero's. I don't care if everything else was amazing.

It's like eating Ice cream and finding a big dollop of **** in the middle. Try eating MORE Ice Cream after that with the taste of **** in your mouth.

Great read OP, I have to say this is the best review I have read so far on this game and agree with it 100%.

To quote Roger Ebert for a moment:“If you have to ask what it symbolizes, it didn’t.”

Damn straight...

Basic logic. Thing is there are people that want to believe they are deep. Deep in a secret, concealed way. And those find almost religious ways to create one explanation that fits that vision.

Still a dogma, they still shallow as everyone else and horrible work still horrible.

And it IS affecting and still keep yhis way the most important thing for then: SELLS. Price already drop and DLCs won't sell because they were render pointless. A faux artist view from them is worth all this fight? I doubt.

Also the scoring system in game reviews is stupid, it doesn't adequitely describe the game whatsoever.

All that matters is what people liked and what people didn't like, an arbitery number doesn't show anything. Ending destroys the entire franchise, that's all people need to know.

Nice to see some reviewers actually acknowledge the issues with the ending. As many have said before, it's funny how so many of the review that have do not come from members of the video game press.

So a more "artistic" site gets it... very interesting.

Great find OP!

It's nice to read a review that actually acknowledges just how terrible the ending was. Most of the big name reviews I've read just gloss over it.

Still, I can't say I'd knock the score of the game that much just because I hated the ending. I'm incredibly bitter atm, but objectively it's important to remember the other 30 hours were great.

Reviewing this game is very hard for the same reasons expressed in this article.  You want to love the game, and during the first 30 hours you do love it.  Then the ending... can you highly rate something that's so bad it ruins not just itself, but also retroactively ruins two other great games?

Some people see past that.  I can't.  It seems the writer of this article also can't, and I can't blame 'em.

Still want to love Mass Effect 3.  Holding that Line.

Favorite quote:

The ending matters! Especially in the case of Mass Effect 3 since it redefines the entire experience . . . in about the same way being left at the altar by a spouse ditching you for your mom redefines a relationship.

it's doesn't matter how good the rest of it was, when the finale is such an abysmal failure like this was the rest of the experience is tarnished. It's the exact reason why many people can't replay 3 or any of the other games for that matter.

Bump, as the author is spot on.

If this were a simple action/shooter than sure, the story doesn't matter that much. But since it's inception it has been a role playing game that empowers the player to make decisions that affect the rest of the game universe. I would have similar distaste for a movie that was 98% awesome then completely missed the mark on the endings.

Its safe to say that they cannot use the 'artistic expression' argument to justify the ending. I wonder where they will run to next?

Meaning if we believe this game is pure art (it's not, it's artistic, but not art), it still fails.

Wow, that was an absolute hammering. And spot on too, both in terms of why the ending really is that horrible, and in terms of why gaming review sites are too.

"A few nights ago, I finished Mass Effect 3. As the credits scrolled I again sat silent in the dark, dumbstruck by what I had beheld. Not out of the bittersweet satisfaction that comes with the conclusion to any story, but in the confusion and anger that occurs when you’ve witnessed a crime you could do nothing to stop."

Best....quote...ever

Really? Hm, wouldn't have given that just because of ending. It's just a part of the game. I thought other parts were brilliant, while ending could have used more work.

The ending is a hipster!

The ending may be "just a part of the game" but its a pretty important one. Especially in a game so story driven.

I said it earlier, but this (ME3) is exactly how not to end a game. It should be held up and glorified as the perfect example, so that others may learn from it.

I thought this was a very articulate review.
I for one, am very sad that this is where the Mass Effect series now stands- especially since it has been my very favorite game series and what got me into gaming to begin with - but unfortunately that doesn't change what happened.
That's part of the tragedy of this situation, and I liked that this reviewer acknowledged that point.

"The ending sets a land speed record for “reversal of quality”, clocking in at lean 4 minutes, 46 seconds!"

From the review, priceless.

2.5 is harsh. 3.5 is more accurate based on what he has written, but still, he does call out the ending where nobody else will.
