I honestly don't get it, how you can you find an NPC with so few lines so interesting? Is it because you can fill in the holes yourself? Not to rant or bash or anything, just curious. *

* Yes I played a female mage, but personally I find it the least interesting origin around. Jowan is annoying from start. Origin states he is a friend but he doesn't act like one imho, so helping him out feels out of character. If BW indeed considered him as party member, I'm glad he got dropped. Ok, so Cullen in the tower later on is quite intense, and fitting too, but it is still just one scene?

I would support this guy as dlc if he replaced one of the warriors instead. Way too many warriors already we need more mages and rogues.

Cullen's story has the making of a great tragedy.  He pines with love for the PC and has to deal with the possibility of having to kill her if she fails the Harrowing, though fortunately that does not come to pass.  While he is still struggling with his feelings, the PC is taken from him and the Mage Tower, perhaps forever.  And *still* he continues to love her, so much so that when they meet again, he thinks she is the form the desire demon has taken.  The PC is what Cullen desires more than anything else in the world.  How's that for a morale booster for a girl?

Like some others have posted, I'd pay for a DLC in which there was some closure to this grande passion.  Cullen wouldn't even have to be a party member; it would be fun just having him hang around the camp, adoring the PC after a hard day of slaughtering darkspawn.

There's this sort of forbidden love thing, that makes his attraction for Fem!Mage even that more potent. Because not only are Templars sworn to watch mages, but they take vows against such attraction. It's great because it shows his individuality. The fact that there's so much gossip about it around the tower, one apprentice going as far to blatantly say "I hear Cullen's in love with you" just makes it that much better.

Then later, he is completely tortured by the memory because of a desire demon. And as the one before me said, it means that he wants you more than anything else in this world. The fact that she can torture him so, the fact that it sticks with him so vehemently through the fact that his fellow Templars are dead as well and he had to watch. The first words out of his mouth are about you and how he's been taunted with the one thing he's always wanted and cannot have. Not about his breathren.

The fact that he doesn't know if he'll ever see you again, you never get a chance to say goodbye, and he still holds onto you? It's endearing. The fact that he has so much character growth, going from a stuttering boy to a hardened man is great, while there are characters in your party who go through less growth (Wynne...Oghren. Neither really change too much in their ways).

From a writer's point of view, it's fantastic. It brings so much to his character and leaves you wanting. At least Tamlen will tell you he loves you before you kill him.

Why not Cullen? You already have one love-obsessed stalker in your party (Leliana), why not another?

Leliana is downright creepy in an unerving way. Cullen is creepy in a rather funny way. From an RP perspective, it would be quite amusing. Maybe even give you a chance to stalk him back and really freak him out.

I'm currently playing a female (elf) mage and feel a bit cheated of an interesting little drama, because I can't talk (as in having a meaningful dialogue) to Cullen after the crisis in the tower is solved. He confessed his love/obsession for my PC but there's no option to take that anywhere.

It will unfortunatly most likely not come an official DLC "fixing" this, as it relates to only one origin and only one gender of that origin.

However, getting Cullen as a companion if you have to ditch Wynne is something all origins could benifit from. If the DLC needs to be kept small, it could be a matter of having him as only a temporary companion to help in the final fight in the tower. Either way, it would make it easier to side with the templars. He could even get a scripted death in the fight, and with his dying breath declaring his love for the female mage PC and that he wished he could come with her.

A sad ending is way better than no ending.

I just thought about it. For those who ever played the Sims, with the superstar expansion pack, you'll remember that when you go on the celebrity fame and fortune path, you get an obsessed fan that follows you around and goes absolute insane in your presence.

Maybe that's an idea for Cullen downloadable content. If you can't have him join as a companion, you can have him sort of be the camp stalker, jumping out of nowhere and squealing in delight, leaving black roses in front of your tent and groveling everytime you berate him. Complete with seriously disturbed moans, giggles, and outbursts.

I'd PAY for content like that. :)

I might convince my husband to develop some kind of a mod to have more Cullen/MagePC interaction, but we would likely have to change his voice entirely as there is no way that I could track down the voice actor and bug him to record extra lines for free. We'll see how it goes... Still trying to figure the toolset out, really.

I think my fondness with Cullen comes from the fact that I used the female possibility of flirting with him to somewhat explain why my girl was very ready to help Jowan. If Cullen had eventually come to her and been like "Let's run away together," she'd have been following in Jowan's "get away" footsteps.

Of course, she'd have told Irving straight-off and tried to think with him of a way to run away. (And she was severely disappointed when her beloved mentor turned on her and used her to catch Lily and Jowan.)

Gosh, I wouldn't even care if I had voice with the DLC. I'd be just as happy with having any DLC at all XD. The sad ending is a great idea too, because there would be closure, and he wouldn't have to be the grounded kid stuck at the Tower.

Also, yes, I love the runaway option! That's the only reason my mage helped Jowan, because in her eyes she wished that someone would do the same for her and Cullen!

That's why my mage ends up with Alistair. She has a thing for templars!

If anyone wants to see why Cullen is so amazing you should check out the ff about him. ff.net has tons of them and all have a different version of Cullen. Some are angsty or sexy and some are endearing and funny, but all show you a side you might not have seen in the game, but can totally visualize.

It might answer that question you had about what we see in Cullen. We see possibilities for great romance.

Not to rant or bash and yet you write "Is it because you can fill in the holes yourself?". I mean that's like so much troll bait it's not funny.

Cullen is that forbidden yet plausible Thornbirds romance =).

Oh and as for the whole 'blah blah warrior blah blah rogue' deal, that doesn't mean you HAVE  to keep putting his skills in sword and board.  Hello...crossbows.  Toss him in some leather and make him ranged or something.

I'd vote for this, and I think I'm for it for the RP rather than the mechanics, though I do definitely see how Cullen could contribute positively to the party tactically. Anyway, I feel like it would be fascinating to have a full-fledged vows-and-all Templar in the group with (a pair of?) Circle mages and an Apostate. It would certainly up the tension amongst the party and would make your job just that much more...delicate as you seek to keep the peace between him and the mages. I'd imagine Cullen's interactions to be kinda like Zevran's, though rather than hiding behind a mask of perverted humor, Cullen's mask would be extreme bitterness and acerbic wit. If you can work your way through all of that you might find a bit of the man he was before the Tower incident. Soft!Cullen vs Hardened!Cullen. XD

I'm still trying to figure out where people get the "stalker" vibe from Cullen. I do not hear anything about him watching you through windows, following you places, stealing your...laundry, writing you creepy letters or anything of the sort. Rather, he minds his post, while doing so he probably checks you out when he thinks you're not looking, and he gets flustered and stutters if you try to talk to him. Cute, perhaps a bit immature? Yes. Creepy and stalkerish? No. I know someone wrote somewhere that Cullen "watches" the fem!mage, as in a creepy way, but I never could find that substantiated through speech anywhere in the Tower no matter how many NPCs I spoke to/eavesdropped on. The most I found was that the Templars in general are rumored to watch the mages bathing...no idea if this was restricted to female mages or not but THAT would be an example of creepiness.

Though I see the probability of this happening very slim, I don't have any qualms with Cullen being a potential party member. He seems like a fine chap, if a little paranoid... Though I've yet to play the Mage Origin/

It'd be nice to have some sort of compensation if you decide to off Wynne in the Broken Circle arc.

A lyrium-touched drug addict as a companion could be a fun in an unpredictable, "what is Cullen gonna do now?" way, but his habit would put a bit of a strain on party resources.

Well, if any of you girls would like to write his dialogue, I can add him as a recruitable in my mod. :D

Possibly.
