I find it really frustrating to speak with male characters in Bioware games lately ( specifically Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 3).  I am speaking with a guy having a normal conversation and suddenly he is hitting on me or confessing a romantic interest and I have no clue what the hell just happened because my guy has clearly been going after the ladies?  How about an option to choose be gay up front, that way the people who are in to that can have their option and I don't have to find myself uncomfortable everytime I talk with a male character.

They are easy to avoid if you romanced someone else before. The game is out, you're just gonna have to deal with it.

Lol, it's not really needed, just watch what you say. It's quite obvious when a conversation is going somewhere else.

This one time I was at a club, a guy came up to me and started to talk. He seemed friendly enough but then he asked if I wanted to dance with him. I said no and moved on with my life and that was it. Maybe you think clubs should enforce gay free sections to avoid these situations from happening?

They should have made the game more realistic, and randomly selected your sexuality for you at the start of the game, without you being aware of it.

So, for example, a fifth of the Shepards in Mass Effect 3 might find out that they've actually been in the closet all along (if not earlier in the series).

Why has no RPG done this yet?

You mean you've never been hit on IRL by another guy? That sucks, cuz usually they go for cuties. People don't know your sexuality until you talk to them or it is fairly obvious by our actions. Don't blame the game as it happens everywhere.

Oh grow up. It's 5 seconds of dialogue, if it makes you that uncomfortable it speaks alot more loudly about your own insecurity than any design failing on Bioware's part.

Actually, I think choosing a sexuality at the start of the game could work, but only if it doesn't restrict you to that sexuality.

For example, if you choose Heterosexual, characters acknowledge that you are straight, but you can still pursue homosexual romances, to the shock and glee of potential homosexual romances.

If you choose Homosexual, characters acknowledge that you are gay/lesbian, but again, you can still pursue heterosexual romances.

If you choose Bisexual, characters acknowledge that a character's sex is not a barrier to you, and thus aren't really surprised if you engage in a romance with them.

Of course, choosing Heterosexual and engaging in heterosexual romances would not have anyone get shocked, the same as if choosing Homosexual and engaging in a romance with a homosexual character would not shock a homosexual character.

Its something to think about, for future RPGs that include romances, such as the Dragon Age franchise.

It could work.

It's just like real life, you can make that choice whenever you want. Not right at the beginning, that's silly.

Awwwww, they hitting on you....perhaps you should just shoot them in the beginning of the game and you won't have to worry about them looking at your sexy self....*passes you some ammo*....feel better luv, no more gays to worry about, now play nice.;)

And with seeing this post, I should also clarify that the way it works now, with a homosexual character showing interest in the PC whether or not the PC is interested, is fine by me.

In real life I've been approached by both men and women. I'm a heterosexual male, but I'm flattered when a guy finds me attractive. That tells me I'm friggen good looking. I'll always tell them I'm not interested as I'm not gay. Hell, I'll laugh with them about it.

But its nothing to get freaked out about. Like SiletNukee has said in the quote here, people won't know your sexuality unless you tell them or its blatantly obvious.

How would that make sense? Just because you've selected it, other characters are going to know? "Oh, I see you've selected the Straight option and are wearing the appropriate uniform ... I won't hit on you".

I don't think there was any problem with the way Cortez or Samantha were handled at all, in fact I thought that they were both handled very well.

They did give you the option at the beginning.

It's called "ACTION MODE".

I find this thought bizarrely entertaining. If there's ever an Alpha Protocol 2, I give you a 60% chance that it will have that feature (and it will be borrowed by BioWare for Dragon Age III or Mass Effect 4, or whatever else will be their next big RPG; like they did with Alpha Protocol's cause-and-effect system for Dragon Age 2).

But seriously, people need to cool off. There are more than enough options to tell the guy you're not interested (and in Anders's case, which is why most people complained about gay romance in DA2, it was as easy as ONE dialogue option), just like IRL, unless you're really really really unable to get the signs. It's perfectly easy to be friendly to Cortez as a Dude Shep without him coming onto you... the same as for Allers and Vega, actually.

Oh no, I don't think they shouldn't hit on you. I think it'd be a nice way to have some alternative dialogue, that's all.

I believe I mentioned it in another thread, but I think as far as romance options coming on to you is concerned, it should be based on their character-

If a character is strong willed and open, they should be the one who comes to you about affection and entering a romantic relationship.

If a character is weak willed and closed, they should be afraid to say anything or be completely oblivious and leave it to the PC to initiate romance dialogue.

How is that realistic, though? No one can ever tell someone's sexual preferences upon meeting them.

Unless your greeting is "Hi! I'm Joe and I love to chase p***y!"

In which case, you REALLY need to learn the definition of the acronym TMI.

Actually, only about 1% of the world's population is gay. Bioware panders to that 1% it seems. I don't care who is gay, I just don't want the gay agenda shoved down my throat. And the game should reflect a realistic gay population instead of having 50%+ of the characters in the game gay.

Oh, having the game select a sexuality for the player is one of the worst suggestions I've ever seen.  If I wanted to role play a gay character I would. Having a flag at the beginning of the game would be nice.

That would be absolutely hilarious in a game, now that you mention it.

"Hi, my name is Commander Shepard and I take ALL the poons!"

I'll be honest; if someone said that to me, I would assume they are an insecure closeted homosexual. :P

....wha....50% of the characters are homosexual? There are two bisexuals and two homosexuals. I got news for ya: there are a lot more then 8  characters in this game.

(and I still maintain that close to 90% of the population is actually bisexual)

Cortez and Traynor were handled well with their romance options. The whole s/s with Traynor's romance scene though needs improvement with the whole shower thing being in under clothing and femshep being fully clothed. That's just plain stupid.
