An Ending I Can Live With

Here's what I thought up as an ending that leaves the current ending intact, and doesn't degenerate into cheesy Mary Sue wish fulfillment.

If your war assets are under 3k, then the scene plays out exactly as it does now.  If it's 3k+, then just as you reach for the button, the station is rocked, and Shepard suddenly finds him/herself back where he left Anderson, before suddenly being jolted back to the Catalyst.  Shepard realizes that it's all an illusion created by Harbinger (the 'indocrination theory') and that he is losing control because he is currently under attack by the Normandy and an escort of allied ships.

Harbinger admits to his deception, but asserts that his offer is genuine.  You have broken the cycle, but as long as he's in control of the Citadel, he won't let you activate the Crucible.  Instead, he gives you the same three options.  At this point, Shepard has enough control back to contact the Normandy and can either order them to press their attack, or agree to Harbinger's demands.

If your war assets are less than 4k, then the attack fails, and you're stuck with the three choices.  If they are 4k+, then the attack brings Harbinger's shields down, but left the Normandy and its escort too crippled to continue the fight and in full retreat.  Harbinger boasts of his victory to Shepard, as the Normandy crew makes for the escape pods.  EDI informs Joker that weapons are offline and the drive core is overheating, and the two make for the escape pods (unless she was taken on the last mission, of course).  Joker tells EDI to get in first so she can help him with his legs, but then shuts the door on her and limps back to the pilot's chair.  The crew tries to radio him from the pods and demands to know what he's doing, to which he replies "something I should have done two years ago."  Or something.

Joker turns the Normandy around and, unless Shepard stops him by agreeing to the Reapers' demands, rams a defenseless Harbinger and knocks him clear of the Citadel.  Shepard is free of his control and activates the Crucible.  Big red explosion, and we see various characters watching as the Reapers are destroyed.

Meanwhile, Shepard is still trapped on the Citadel, which is falling apart around him.  If you saved Anderson, then he will pull Shepard up, and together they help eachother back to the beam.  If not, and you have over, say, 4.5k assets, then your squad managed to reach the beam and comes to Shepard's rescue.  We see Alliance shuttles touching down around London, looking for survivors, and hear one of your squad carrying a comatose Shepard and yelling for a medic.

Tack on an end scene with Shepard being visited in a field hospital by Anderson or Hacket, then talking with EDI about love, friendship, loss, all that jazz, then sees the LI coming to visit, queue credits.

There.  The end.  No, epilogue, no slideshow of what happens next.  I agree with what Hudson says about the whole game being an ending of sorts, and yes, speculation is a good thing in moderation.

Everyone is happy, except probably Joker fans
