Anyone who has played Arrival can point to the destruction a destroyed relay can do. This is being constantly debated as to whether or not the galaxy is destroyed because of the Red and Green endings.

Does it truly matter though? If all the Mass Relays are destroyed the first species or group to develop a substitute would be the unchallenged masters of the universe. Similar to how centuries of Japanese Feudalism was destroyed in only a few decades because of gunpowder. Shepard's destruction of the Relays would leave the galaxy in a position to be taken over by a brutal and unstoppable dictatorship. Congratulations Shepard, you have potentially created the most powerful dictatorship EVER because you couldn't tell the Catalyst to shut up!
