Sincere question for everyone, not just kevin1gamer: when people make wishlists for holiday seasons, do they really expect others to get them said gifts, or are they just wishful expressions of desire? In some cultures (including my own) it can be considered rude and presumptuous to say that you want such-and-such a gift, especially if you make your desires public. Also, what is your personal attitude towards such lists when you see family, friends and acquaintances making and displaying them? Does it influence your likelihood of actually purchasing that present? I'm curious. :)

Also, I don't traditionally give, receive or obtain for myself expensive stuff for Christmas. A dinner treat outside, even from McDs, is good enough for me. I guess over the years, I've probably learned not to demand or expect too much.

My christmas present will (hopefully) be a Novint Falcon. It's been around for a couple of years but now they're about to release drivers for basic support in all games I think it's a safe enough bet not to end up unused so I've started dropping hints. (if anyone else is interested the current sale on today and monday is a really good one).

@Amberyl Ravenclaw: I feel it's perfectly acceptable to drop hints (or specific lists of possibilities if it's something like gaming that not everyone will know about) but some surprise is nice as well.

Well, for one they are considered to be a help for those that are clueless about what to gift. Do you know anyone you couldn't find a personal gift for? Wishlists make guesses in such cases unnecessary. Good gifts that come from heart are very nice, of course, but also always involve some risk. (Risk meaning possible hurting in this case.) My personal take on it would be that I would only expect some of those things, and some more creative ones. Also, when I make a list, I tend to keep it short.

That may also be due to the fact that what I really want is not material. *sigh*

I've never had anyone give me a wish list before, but I don't have kids.

Hmm, I'm not really sure. I suppose there's a few games I want, a new jacket, and a steak or ten. Of course, most of those are things I'd like to have right now...

I didn't put them in that state, so frankly, I don't care.  =]

I really don't care so long as it's thoughtful and not food(I'm sick of people giving chocolates or something like that, that's unimaginative).

Music and films are always nice.

My family seems to be hard to read in some respects, so we just tell each other what we want, and keep it reasonable. That way we should all be content with our gifts.

Some people do consider it rude to tell them what you would like, even if you give them a choice of several things. The way I personally see it is, it is better to tell some things you may want, then to just not use the gift they would normally choose. I also view it is better to ask what someone wants if you're not sure, because although you may give the impression of not knowing them enough to be able to choose a present, it is better then giving them a present they won't use or like, and giving them that impression anyway. The 1st case at least shows you care enough to give them something they would like rather then tossing the dice, as well as actually getting them something they like.

Now, this only works if people  view you as a logical or practical person. If you are already viewed as someone who deals through emotions, then this will likely just give the image you are lazy, although it could work if you are stressed out about getting them a gift and show it.

As far as it actually influencing people's decisions, it does minorly. Some people will ignore it, and you couldn't do anything about those people anyway. They are the people who would likely be going to be spiteful anyway and choose gifts based on what they believe you will like, and not on what you have shown yourself to like. Either that or will try hard and study and will probably give you a better gift then what you could suggest anyway. For the people it could influence, it means that you are more likely to get one of those gifts.

Same here but some people in my family can be seriously over- generous. That would be fantastic if they had the money to spend, but unfortunately, they really don't. I tend to just say I want a book and if there is anything pricey that catches my eye, I tend to buy it for myself.

Yeah, I usually collect wishlists from others, since I dont have good fantasy and I dont like running around in stores hours after hours not knowing what to buy.
