Garrus for the win.
Both him and Shepard are vulnerable people who need to keep a brave face on. Shepard can't just tell a friend what she's going through because it's just difficult for others to understand her burden. Same case for Garrus in ME2, having been betrayed by that one dude and having to carry the burden of his teammates' deaths. They can rely on each other to share their baggage. They have been through enough together to know what the other one is going through. Their relationship progress is the most organic in my opinion.
^ This for me. My Shep never felt like she could really open up to anyone else on the team about her own pain, because she was more or less their adoptive momGarrus to me was the only other natural "leader" of the group, so of course he'd know what it's like to have to keep a brave face on.
Plus, I'm sick of broken puppies as the male LI in games. Garrus is a total bad*** and can take care of himself
In ME2 I was onto Garrus straight away, and Kaiden a blip in the rearview mirror.
Garrus is tough, honest, loyal, but also sweet, looks out for the little guy, always has time for you, and is just the perfect combination of best friend and lover. He is written so unbelievably well, and in addition to that he has a damn sexy voice.
In ME3 everything seemed so natural, nothing was forced, and it was heartbreaking watching my Shep and Garrus say goodbye to each other, you could really feel every emotion.
And that last conversation made me super teary eyed. They finally have a chance to rest after all this is over and yet they already kind of knew they might not make it out alive. That scene is just a major tear jerket.
Had to listen to Ghostface Killarney to regain manhood. Lol

Tali is the only person any my Shepard ever had a relationship with. I always figured my Shepard was more of the reluctant hero, who stepped up when it was needed. He doesn't see himself as anyone special. The fact he is almost legendary in the Alliance actually makes him feel out of place and frustrated, they only see the N7. He only felt like he was doing his duty and he was making it up as he went along the best he could. So why is he suddenly a hero and a leader?
In ME1, A little quarian at odds with the universe bumps into Shepard in a back alley on the Citadel. Where people look up to Shepard, people look down on Tali. Nobody ever sees them as anything except their reputations or stereotypes. Both find respite from their respective isolation in each other and always treated each other as equals. In ME2, She is strong in front of others but lets her guard down for Shepard as he does for her. They break eachother's isolation and find something they both craved, someone who sees the being beneath the armor.
In ME3, everything Shepard did was motivated more by Tali then by Earth. He found something to fight for beyond simple duty. She found someone who would move heaven and earth to bring her a future free of fear or want of home. Someone who always saw her and not just the suit.
They are going to build that house.
This!
Lets be honest. Us, Talimancers, don't give a cr*p about earth. Everything we accomplished was for this little Quarian.
And damn it, I wanted my Shepard to survive for her. Who is to make a fool out of himself with a hammer and a pack of nails on Rannoch now? Damn. I should have known, on my first playthrough. Things were looking faaaaar too good.

Kelly Chambers was the most sane female character in ME2 with no personal baggage dragging her down. Talking with her felt like a normal flirtation leading to something more. I wish there was more to do with her in 3, but was happy for the chance to solidify the romance.
Too bad she died.

Fully agree, my shep was a spacer, what does he care about the homeword? Just a rallying cry against the Turians/Batarians for all he cared. Perhaps thats why my shep went after Tali, both grew up in a fleet, high ranking parants, presssured to succede. He never felt like Earth was home, but when he met Tali and learned how much having a world that was your own meant, things changed. He fought for her, he fought to give her a world, and he was gonna be damned if he wasnt gonna be there to make it a home.
What happaned to my spellcheck?

"I want more time."
That line.....made me determined as hell to keep my Shepard alive and save Tali. I will give Bioware eternal credit. They made us want to fight.

It's tougher as a FemShep because there's Garrus... and then there's Thane. My FemShep would eventually choose Thane because she felt that Garrus would be a better match for Tali. Don't even get me started if Mordin was an option

From a slightly deeper RP perspective, either of those Shepards had been through hell and back with Tali and Garrus on good terms, getting to know each other, and they were doing it again in ME2. It seemed natural to take the relationship a step further when the opportunity presented itself in either case.

Kaidan! I keep trying to do a play-through where I don't choose him, but I just can't bring myself to... I think the VA'ing for him was phenomenal, and I just really like the character's personality. But I always go for the boy-next-door in real life too...
This! I can't imagine being able to play through ME1 without romancing him. He just sneaks up on you and before you know it, you're hooked. Liara is just plain annoying to me - too whiny and naive in the first game, and too emo in 2 and 3. Kaidan can be annoying sometimes, but then he pulls out that little boy smile and I'm just 'daaaaw'!
Though I'm seriously thinking of cheating on him with Garrus in my next playthrough of 2. Though I'm not sure I can - Garrus is my BFF, my absolute truest companion, but I don't know if I can consider him romantically.

I think I'm going to try being a bro-shep and see if that changes anything. But luckily Kaidan is still there to fall back on ;]

Then I went back and played ME1, and talked to everyone, and I fell in love with Kaidan. Now I romance him every time. I can relate to a lot of his issues, and I love that he has issues and can still be a normal person. In terms of the story, he complements my renegon Shep well, because he usually encourages diplomacy and caution, so he acts as a necessary counterweight to her more impatient and violent tendencies. It was interesting having him gone in ME2, because I picked a lot more renegade options than I did in ME1, where I was trying to impress Kaidan (especially after Horizon, when I started being renegade out of spite).
I also like how Kaidan's romance plays out over all three games, because it feels realistic. Kaidan has trust issues and you have to work those out in order to salvage the relationship. I think it's interesting that there's a few points where you kind of have to cave in an argument -- like admitting if you cheated -- because real relationships involve compromise. Part of what I like about Kaidan is his integrity; I wouldn't respect him if he just ran back to Shepard with blind faith. And I like having to work for it -- Horizon was infuriating on so many levels, so I started ME3 still mad at him, but it actually felt like an accomplishment when I convinced him to trust me again.
His voice helps, of course.
I have a playthrough where I cheated on Kaidan with Thane... that was sort of an accident, too... I was really just trying to see if I could get him to call Shep "siha" without a full romance, and then I ended up liking him so much that I just let it play out. I think Thane is a great influence on Shepard, and I love listening to him talk about philosophy. But what really sold me on Thane's romance is that his story starts out about death, and ends up being about life, and holding on to it as long as you can, as fervently as you can. It's tragic, and beautiful, and well worth the inevitable heartbreak.
