1. ME : I just love the way the game immersed you into this new universe, with exploration of uncharted worlds and interaction with aliens in a futuristic setting. I'll never forget my very first playthrough
2. ME2 : I spent countless hours on it, really enjoyed the new mechanics but not enough rpg elements IMO
3. ME3 : very good overall, plays like a charm but it was a little short and i dunno something felt off...as if everything I did was predetermined and there weren't many choices. Just an impression. Oh yeah and the ending left me with a bitter taste in my mouth

That's not to say ME3 is bad, apart from the obvious.

2,1,3. Like everyone else the 3rd would easily be number 1 but the ending made any playthroughs choices irrelevant.

1, 3, 2
None of the other 2 can even compare to how amazing the first ME is. The atmosphere and story that game bought is from another world.

ME2 #1, I enjoyed the character driven story of the 2nd title, as opposed to the Reaper focused stories from the 1st and 3rd. ME2 is what *really* drew me into the *universe*.
ME3 #2 (I can just headcanon and fanfic the terrible endings away)

1. ME2 - Even though it is the mid-point of the story, it was excellent, vast improvement over the first.
2. ME1 - Great story, combat a bit clunky, solid game.
3. ME3 - If I could squeeze this between 1 and 2 I would, but a few things really bother me: crappy journal/quest tracking, auto-dialogue, broken camera during cutscenes, and ending(s) plot holes. I still love it though...
I don't like ranking them, feels wrong, I enjoy the series as whole and the progression of gameplay throughout the years.

If you view the games for what they were when they came out... 2>1>3 If you ignored when they came out and compared them right now 2>3>1

Quality of:
Story-
1. ME3-emotionally involving
2. ME1-fresh, and compelling universe
3. ME2-less cohesive (in other words, squad based) story
Gameplay-
1. ME3-Excellent combat, if weak journal implementation, and great customization
2. ME2-Combat improvement over 1st game, less variety in weapons/upgrades
3. ME1-Unchallenging, sometimes grinding combat. Yay crouch button!
Immersion
1. ME1-Universe to sink right into, with great villains
2. ME3-Immersion broken by the Catalyst and Shep's reaction. Til then, golden
3. ME2-Not bad, but not nearly as strong or memorable as ME1 or 3
Character Interaction-
1. ME2- Large, interesting squad, accessible and with appealing dialogue/stories
2. ME3- Good squad size balance, entertaining interactions with NPCs, fun reunions
3. ME1- Never really felt need to interact with squad besides romance.
My two cents. I loved every installment of this trilogy, controversy, debates and plot holes aside. Could it all have been better? Of course. Just like everything else.

Well done. I agree, characters is a tough one though i like the original cast so it's a coin flip with ME2.
