For me, ME1 > ME3 > ME2
Though all of the games in the series are very good.

Gameplay: ME2 = ME3 > ME1
Narrative: ME1 > ME2 > ME3
If they fixed the freaking ending, 3 would probably rank higher than 2.

ME1 > ME3 > ME2
Even with its horrific ending and several other nagging problems, ME3 is much better than ME2. It improves upon the combat introduced in ME2 and draws from positive elements included in ME1. Neither of them stand up to ME1, though.

ME3 - ME1 - ME2
ME2 was just missing something... I felt like I was being railroaded throughout the entire game, because I basically was.

Gameplay: ME3, ME2, ME1
Story: ME3, ME2, ME1
Ending: ME3!!! ME2, ME1
Replay: ME3 and ME2 are tied because I played ME2 like 8 times and I'm on my third ME3. So for now they're tied.

ME2 by far then ME1 and ME3 are around the same ME1 was technically flawed but the story was good ME# was technically awesome and story was great until the ending soured the whole series for me.

In their chronological order for me.
I concur. I liked 1 the best out of the trilogy too. I found myself asking why they removed so much in ME2 and 3.
ME1 is large in scope, and has a lot. ME2 and 3 are very simplified in comparison. I got so used to playing ME2 and 3 tho, that I had to change the controls in ME1. Default for grenades is R, and I found myself throwing a grenade when I tried to reload, which you don't even have to do in ME1. Also changed sprint to spacebar and tactical hud to shift (default is reverse).

Truthfully, Mass Effect 1 & 3 are tied in first place for me
Mass Effect 3 positives (1st):
-best combat of the three games
-evolving powers
-every squadmate is useful
-detailed interactions among squadmates, party banter is improved
-graphics are indeed the best
-romance subplot is amazing, Shepard can also be friends with squaddies and also be disagreeable
-Javik is a true squadmate and not just a click-and-dialogue character for DLC
negatives
-auto-dialogue
-romance scenes are relatively tame
-Liara required on missions way too much, she's forced too much
-the endings
Mass Effect 1 (also 1st, slightly better than ME3 for me) positives:
-heavier roleplaying influence
-no auto-dialogue
-Shepard can be neutral/can be interpreted with a lot of personalities
-every squadmate is useful (you need a Tech for locks/hacks, team balance is key)
-more involving sidequests/exploration
-very time consuming
-Shep can be friends without having to romance a squadmate
-romances are explicit
-Shepard can have positive or antagonistic relationships with ALL squadmates, including Liara
negatives
-character creation for male Shepard is meh
Mass Effect 2 (last for me) positives:
-every squadmate has a detailed personal quest
-squadmates are more colorful and varied
negatives
-99% of combat is spent in cover
-only Miranda + another squadmate is useful at all
-Shepard can't just be friends without initiating romance
-Shepard is either nicey-nice or a big jerk, not as much variation as ME1 & ME3
-no weapon mods
-no real reason to talk to squadmates other than romance/loyalty mission
-romances are cheesy flings
-LoTSB forces Liara to be your friend
Mass Effect 1 & 3 vie for the top for me because both have detailed roleplaying interactions. ME3 slightly wins over because of the intersquad relationships and banter and far less staticy, plus the combat rocks. ME1 follows behind because of Shepard's vast options (paragon, neutral, renegade). ME2 just stinks, no weapon mods, squadmates aren't really that involving, more like a fps with 'roleplaying' aspects. BioWare really learned with bringing the best of both games with ME3 I will say that.
