Reverse chronological. 321. Rating them is pretty hard though, since they are all downright marvellous. For now, atleast, it feels that ME3 takes the spot as the best one.

ME3 doesn't let you import your ME1 character....based on that alone it get at the back of the pack.

M2>ME1>>>>>>>>>>>>>>ME3

1. ME2
2. ME1
3. ME3

Mass Effect 2 had the better combat, inventory system, squadmate interaction/stories and balance of main plot vs optional missions

Mass Effect had the best story and levelling/skill system.

Mass Effect 3 had a better variety of enemies.

Da fuk? What kind of question is this? Asking which ME game is the best is like asking which one of Chuck Norris's three fists kicks more as$ ( right fist left fist or chin fist), there is no right answer as they all kick equal as$

Gameplay wise, ME3 > ME2 > ME1

Story line wise, ME1 > ME2 > ME3 (After the Geth/Quarian incident the game fell sharply in my eyes... then the ending... *nightmares*)

Best overall game wise, ME2 > ME1 > ME3

Most replay value, ME2 > ME1 > ME3

Best Multiplayer... ME3 xD

ME3 was easily the best in quality and enjoyment, but was immediately destroyed at the end. :(

ME3 > ME2 > ME1

Mass Effect 3 had a crappy ending, yes, but alone that isn't bad. It's just that it ruins replayability for all three games for me, so it equally harms all three. I think that Mass Effect 3 had the best gameplay and combat system, and some of the best story moments in the series.

Mass Effect's attempts to be more like a "true RPG" led to evaluating your inventory every ten minutes to make sure you had the best weapons possible, which was honestly a headache. Mass Effect 2 was overly simplified - you just pick one rifle and chances are you'll have it for the rest of the game. The third game nicely balanced the two, adding ranked weapons and mods back, but without all the headache that an OCD player might face

I feel like the big jump occured between the first and second games. The first one had action and story, but the second one took it from a fun game to an epic adventure. Everything from the combat system to the UI to the story became easier to use, but also better. Enemies weren't just shields and health - you had ammo types, health types, etc.

In terms of story
ME3 (up until the ending) > ME1 > ME2

In terms of music
ME3 > ME2 (close, mainly because ME3 brought back some tunes like Vigil) > ME1

In terms of gameplay/controls/UI
ME3 > ME2 > ME1

In terms of ending sequences
ME2 > ME1 > Human Revolution > Mafia II > Tetris > Pong > ME3

It's hard to judge a specific order when they all have the nr1 spot for each element.

ME2 does have the most and best fleshed out side missions, but horrible main story (or very little of it).
ME1 has the best story, with a main protagonist and also much more RPG fell, although the RPG part could use tweaks which in subsequent game went TOO far, with no inventory and less guns etc etc.
ME3 is epic in it's story and emotion and is really good with combat etc, but of course the ending is what put's a damper on the whole thing.

Part of me wan'ts to put ME1 at the top spot cause it also has the advantage of being the very first game and that feeling of discovery and realizing how fun and awesome of a game you had to look forward too.
You never knew anything about the lore and story etc so it was all fresh and new.
So it will always have that special place in my heart.

Overall this trilogy is the very best of gaming along with a few other games, in my whole gaming career, so kudos to Bioware for that, but the ending and the monetization mar that experience a bit.

The top spot game for me of all time is still Deus Ex ( the first one)....

ME3>ME2>ME1 - it is hard though to distinguish the games in a lot of respects because of the importing of characters, but the overall plot line is definitely a crescendo.

Never played the first, but for me it's ME3-ME2, with ME2 as a VERY close second.

1. ME2 (What sells it is the amount of hubs and level of choice/crew interaction)
2. ME
3. ME3

I like them all and ME3 certainly pulled the ol'heart strings on a few occasions but I found it to be a more shallow experience than I had come to expect from ME and ME3

Gameplay:-
ME3 - Has the best of ME2 and ME1.
ME2 - Plays much better but lacks a lot of customisation.
ME1

Narration:-
ME3
ME2
ME1

Plot:-
ME1 - Big twists and plot developments.
ME3 -
ME2 - Basically just find the collectors.

Characterisation:-
ME3 - The pinnicle for the series for sure. Makes you really want to explore you ship after every mission.
ME2
ME1 - Very thin to be honest, Star Trek Voyager thin.

Ending:-
ME1 -
ME2 - I don't think I've punched the sky before this ending :).
ME3 - It's not just the actual resolution was bad, but the fact they missed out having us have a face off with Harbinger in some form. I wonder if that was what the IM boss fight was going to be.

RPG (stats and loot):-
ME1 - Quite a lot, it's just a shame it didn't work well with a more intuitive TPS mechanic.
ME3 - Took ME2's updated combat mechanics and threw in some more stat and customization options. As well as added more loot.
ME2

RPG (actual roleplaying):-
ME3
ME1/ME2 - Both do a great job.

Overall
ME3 - Forgetting the ending, the game was a fantastic experience.
ME1 - While it's enviroments are rather dull and cut and paste, the plot and setting was awesome. Also Sovereign :)
ME2 - While I have put this game last, this does not mean I don't think it's any good. It's great, it's just the other two are even better.

ME - Introduced me to a fantastic universe with much potential
ME2 - continuation of my stories improved mini games, though mining of planets was a tad tedious
ME3 - Multiplayer killed it for me since I Cant atm!! this should have remained a single player game like the rest in the series (that way I get to have some ME myself and I time) and if they really want a mutiplayer aspect created an offshoot game that catered for it!
