Question is do the Asari really look the way they do, or is it a mind trick?

It's mind control to make other species think they're attractive. So says the bachelor party.

They give birth, appear female, and are essentially female in most ways.

They are female. Little bit of genetics theory: the Y-chromosome is thought to evolved as a mutation of the X-chromosome. Considering their basic external anatomy is the same as human, I would expect the process or reproduction and birth to be similar to Earth mammals. I just reasoned that the X->Y mutation just never occured in their species or it was evolved out.

Species on Earth that are "mono-genered" are also usually considered biologically female. I know there are several species of fish this applies to.

I think they really do, but that they release pheromones that trick people into noticing only the bits they have in common with their speicies.

A human notices how they look mostly human, and how their head-tentacles look like hair.
A Turian notices the head tenticles as being much like their own, and one many the face tattoos.
A Salarian notices how there smooth curved body structure and general colouration is much like their own.

So while they do look like that, everybody interpretes them differently.

You know it can't be homosexual right? Because she's not male? That's the definition of homosexual....

She is something we don't have a word for, sexuality wise, really.

Monogendered doesn't mean no-gendered. It means they're all the same gender.

Which would be female. They have mammaries, they give birth, and appear in every way feminine. They're female.

Since they do not reproduce directly(ie taking fathers genetic material and fusing it with mothers) they use a mental connection to take dna data only to randomize their own dna. Also they give live births like humans and as evidence is their navel which i hope everybody knows why humans have it. Asari probably lack even ovaries or similar organs that species with sexual reproduction require.

Exactly. Since there is no exchange of gametes there is no sex. There may be some fanatastic mind melding, but all Liara is doing is copying data from your dna chain without taking any. Therefore, there are no sex scenes with Liara, the term does no apply.

and that your relationship could, from one angle, be defined as homosexual.

"A mono-gender race—distinctly feminine in appearance—the asari are known for their elegance, diplomacy, and biotic talent."

mono gender= one gender=female
they are female.
The codex also says they are an all female race.

She's biologically female, but not necessarily in a social/mental sense. The asari are mono-gendered and thus do not know genders the way humans do. Having a preference for men or women is probably as significant to asari as having a preference for a certain hair colour is to humans.

However, if your Shepard considers her a woman (and I think many humans in the ME universe would consider asari to be women), she/he would probably think of the relationship as gay/straight depending on her/his own gender.

Asari = female race nothing more and nothing less. All Asari's have female names, find me an Asari thats actually in the game that has a male name than we will begin to talk about how they are Monogender and whatever else. Otherwise Liara is female and my femshep thats in love with Liara is also female, hot lesbian sex. ME1 and ME3 rewarded us who played femshep and romanced Liara lol. Also Asari were a loophole for having a same-sex relationship at that time since they were a female alien race

But begin this discussion again after you find an Asari in game that has a male name, until than i think this topic has been concluded.
