One thing Composers can do and this is really a production trick is automate the FX of the Cymbal swell on the swell part then back off. (Send more reverb to the swell part then back off)
I have heard a lot of the Dragon Age Origin's Sound tracks, didn't hear a ton of Cymbal swells? It must be one track that plays a lot? Could it be that the swells are actually part of the music and not used as an enhancement on ending phrases or crescendos?
It's interesting your bring this up^_- it's really an orchestration and production problem. It's like adding to much of something then when you add it again it does nothing, because you have already added to much before the Big Chorus or crescendos.

A good example of it would be the song at the introduction for the game, when they're talking about the Grey Wardens it really gets out of hand.StrangeCat Productions wrote...
Yea a lot of times people get carried away. Cymbal Swells can work nice enhancing answering or questioning phrases, if you keep the Swell down and the orchestra, then alter bring in a Timipini Roll and full Cymbal Cress To Full orchestra it can work better. This needs to be done at FF or F if the first Cymbal swell was p or mp, or else it will lose it's effect.

There are like, 6 or 7 within a 30 second period.
Oh, and the part with Duncan pushing the darkspawn dude off the cliff.

I only think it would be a problem if the BGM had to many Cymbal swells or the Main battle theme did when you fight Dark Spawn. Obviously the Director and Composer went over everything and the Director is the one that decides^_-
