I have to agree wholeheartedly with this entire breakdown. Seriously, how can a company that made games like KOTOR, Jade Empire, SWTOR and the first two ME's (to name a few) ALLOW something like this ending to stand? It's contrary to everything else they've done in the past.

'Star Child/God Child' = Deus Ex Machina (in my opinion, anyway)

I've said it once, I'll say it again, I really want to know if William C. Dietz had ANYTHING to do with the writing of the endings, because it would really explain a lot if he did.

I don't think people are considering just how insidious the synthesis ending is.

It's a damaging idea for society. Even in a science-fiction setting, the notion that the only way to get along is for everyone to be the same.

It's borderline racism. Seriously, no hyperbole. It's evil thinking.

Definitely, and Bioware need to be called out on it. Rewriting every living being in the galaxy to conform to this stupid god child's idea of perfection is probably the most evil idea I have ever seen in a game. Totalitarianism on such a scale dwarfs even the reapers themselves...and Shepard does it willingly (if you pick the green explosions).

These endings are not just bad, they are morally repugnant.

Seriously, Bioware, did it not occur to you that we might want an ending where...you know...we win? As Joe said, it would have been better to just sit and watch the victory fleet go down fighting. At least there would have been honor in that.

Bioware is saying that the best result is to forcibly turn everyone into cyborgs...

I will bring peace to the Galaxy. Everlasting peace. And unity. And uniformity. you need not fear. synthesis will remove fear. synthesis will remove sex,
and class, and colour, and creed. You will become identical. You will
become like us.

Essentially this.

Though all the endings are ****ty, synthesis is not an option, diversity is great - I'd rather take a huge risk and control the Reapers or destroy all 'synthetics' (Star Kid trying to save him and his creations through a lie at highest EMS) then doom the Galaxy to be...one shade of gray.

Well... all of it the truth.

So, BW, scrap everything from Harbingers assault onward... and add a few more scenes for war assets. Average production time for that: 3 months. Get to it!

Looks like the movement is gaining powerful war assets.

You are correct, and we have already observed the substantial impact and difference that collection of war assets, and the methods employed in doing so, has upon a final outcome.

Angry Joe hits the nail almost perfectly on the head. Specifically my head canon ending for the Mass Effect series is as he stated. Shepard refuses to chose and lets the War Assets he's gathered fight the Reapers and determine who will win. The Crucible was solely useful as a means to unite a Galaxy under a diverse banner. The finale would then be the God Child desperately trying to activate the Crucible as his Reaper Fleet begins to lose the battle, and try to destroy all relays and what not. Then Shepard makes the choice (my choice at least) to destroy the Citadel, thus saving the Galaxy and all he loves one last time.

And of course, in my head canon, he would repeat the Mordin phrase, "A new beginning...for all of us."

He pretty much hit all the key reasons I was annoyed about the ending in my own personal analysis. This video needs to get to Bioware.

Angry Joe has lost what little respect I had for him. Dude's a tool.

The man handled it in a calm and anayalitical way. If that makes him a tool then I'd hate ot hear what you'd consider anyone else who hated the endings.

Illusive man handled things calm and analyticaly too. He's still tool in the end.

Angry Joe does address one of the basic flaws in the Synthesis ending. It has others: thematically being awkward, the ethics of being the one to choose for everyone, and the magnitude of power to enact this level of change on the galactic level (an old saying expanded, "it is easier to destroy than to create, but the power to change is truely that of a god."). But he hits the nail on the largest issues, diversity seemed like a strenght, or something you can fight for in ME, but the Synthesis ending says, no to all that.

I love the person who brought up the Cybermen picture from Doctor Who. Synthesis is pretty much what the Cybermen want to do. Create a universe where everyone is equal. There will be no war, no class division, no poverty, all will be equal... a Cybemen. They saw themselves as the ultimate evolution of life, and their gift a boon to others.

Hmmm sounds a lot like what the Star Child says about the merits of... Synthesis. Oh god... the Star Child is Cybercontroller One.... Doctor where are you.... Shepard needs you!

I am certain, then, that you will be able to rationally rebut the ten points of contention stated by Angry Joe.  Please do so.

Sorry, this guy and all the people that think these are things that make the ending "bad" are just plain below the level of thought required to comprehend the ending.

HOW can you point out every single thing that is inconsistent and plot holey about the ending in the same breath as pointing out the greatness of the entire rest of the game, and not stop and think..."hey...wait....made by the same people....weird....I don't think everyone on the dev team had a sudden anurism and lost all logical capacity for storytelling...perhaps...perhaps theres something else here, maybe I should read deeper into what's going on."

The thing is SO PATENTLY not reality, it has the EXACT flavor of EVERY OTHER dream sequence we have had, slow moving, gun of infinite ammo, things happening for no reason...and the dreams you have had before basically tell you 'child = fire; child + you = still fire; fire = bad;" so CHOOSE THE THING THE CHILD PORTRAYS AS THE WORST OPTION! Gah, its like this whole forum is suddenly bereft of the capacity for analytical thought.

Excellent review from Joe, Bioware screwed up so massively I still can't believe it.

This game cost milions and millions to make and the chose to risk that investment on two Dev's who stated they intentionally wanted to create controversy...just cause.

Funny that you bring up Doctor Who. When I saw the Synthesis ending I thought about the episode when the Doctor realizes at the end of time, the last humans made themselves little machine balls so they could live forever. Thus loosing all of their humanity.

It was heartbreaking then, and in ME it's just devestating
