Having just unlocked the M-98 widow in multiplayer (extreme happy face) was wondering which is better the M-98 Widow or the Alliance Issued Black Widow, also this may sound stupid but is this a good Sniper to use
for a Infitrator (Level 19, better late than never i suppose) instead of the stock Mantis?

M-98 Widow does slightly more damage I believe, but the Black Widow has three shots, which in my opinion makes all the difference.

And yeah, both are great for Infiltrator. Little heavy, but the power recharge time never bothered me. Also, compared to the Mantis, the Widow can shoot through light armor and some walls, which makes me think that it is the better rifle.

Black widow is far more rare than the widow. But it's also quite a bit better due to having 3 shots instead of 1, even if it is slightly weaker. You still get the damage bonus from coming out of cloak with all 3 black widow's shots if you're quick with it.

I just got Black Widow and it is fantastic - Widow sure does more damage per shot, but Black Widow does much more damage per reload. It also counters shields nicely, first shot removes shield, second one kills. Finally, you can kill some dude and then just make another pot-shot or two at another guy fast.

Leveling Black Widow is kinda impossible, though.

I would go with the Widow unless you have a really high level Mantis. The penetration from the Widow is just too nice to pass up, blasts right through Guardian's shields.

DPS is important but not the be all end all. You want to be cloaked/shooting as much as possible to ensure survivability. If you play with a black widow on gold it will teach you bad habits, and probably not be as effective as a widow.

Have you ever used the BW? I guess not coz it makes the Widow looks like crap (sorta ;)

Your survivability point is just plain silly. You can fire 3 rounds while Cloaked so no difference whatsoever except you will be killing much faster. You can kill 3 normal goons in one Cloak cycle which is impossible with the Widow.

Yep. And I perform far better with the Black Widow than I do the Widow. The widow has a lot of trouble taking down units that move quickly. An example being phantoms. With the widow if I get caught on my own by one it's basically a death sentence unless I can get her at a far enough range. With the black widow, you can strip her barrier and kill her, without having to reload and risk her recovering her health/barrier.

What are you talking about with these "bad habits"? My survivability has not changed in the slightest when I put down my widow.

The black widow is an amazing gun. I currently have a widow 5 and still prefer my black widow over it. The reason is, sometimes you're forced to take out smaller targets like canibals or geth troopers that die in one hit using black widow anyways. And in the case where you have to take down larger targets, you have more shots to work with when you come out of cloak. Maybe one day I will go back to the widow when it gets all the way up to 10, but for now, black widow is just too good to pass up.

Its not fair to say that playing with the Black Widow'll on Gold teach you bad habits. I played with both, and its just a matter of skill. When you snipe, you NEED to land those headshots, nomatter what weapon you're using.

Not impossible! Just unlikely and rare. But I've gotten triple kills with one shot with the widow. Good feeling.

I cant wait to unlock the Black widow. Hopefully my widow being leveled a bit doesnt make the black widow useless for a while...

Its also accurate.

Widow/Black Widow shots to the body do jack-all if you're on Gold.

Indeed. With the Cloak dmg bonus you can kill normal goons with a body shot anyway (Gold) without equipment.

I'm not sure, myself. I've played with the Black Widow quite a lot and the jury is still out.

I kill quickly with a single shot rifle and move to the next target, in some cases, I need to fire twice with the Black Widow. Kinda throws off my rhythm and makes me feel like I'm slowing down. Even though it probably balances out, with the multiple shots.

I call bull**** as a gold player. Due to the fact you can't overkill shields/barriers on gold the headshot is often just wasted damage. The time to line up headshots often becomes a liability unless you're not playing infiltrator...in which case, what the hell are you doing using a Widow? That's a lot of weight on a character.

Here's my 2c:

Black Widow forces headshots. Get fricking good at headshots, or the weapon is not going to perform up to its capability.  This means it has potentially a much higher learning curve - and possibly some relearning.   In my view, the Widow actually encourages worse habits: settling for center-of-mass bodyshots.  This is LAZY.

Black Widow easily outstrips the Widow if you use it correctly - since all 3 shots can be dumped within the cloak damage bonus (which lasts 2.5 sec after the first shot is fired). With this gun, once you get used to the kick, you can re-aim in the refire CD and have the next headshot lined up. Three headshots from this gun is pure murder on any heavy unit, and nearly double the damage the Widow could put out.  My teammates are always amazed at the massive chunks I take out of any heavy.

I do, however, feel that the only "good" base for snipers on gold is Firebase Dagger. Nothing else is large/open enough.

Skilled hands will be best suited with a Black Widow, which has the highest burst damage in the game short of a missile. people espouse the widow because its good for those with crappy hosts or mediocre aim, and they feel tentative about using the headshot machine that is the black widow. With the cloak bonus and multiple shots in the boosted damage window, black widow is the absolute best weapon damage dealer in the game.
