This whole thing is really very ugly. Bioware truly is playing with fire. First DA2, then an only so so TOR, now this? Really ugly. At least TOR, being an MMO, has time on it's side. Plenty of room to improve and perfect the things that are missing. Single player games don't have the same luxury. Well, unless you count dlc and expansions. Still.....
It's really amazing how only a year or so ago, they were the darlings of the industry in the eyes of their fans. ....the most loyal fans, like the Bethesda fan. How fast things can change. Just proves that taking your fanbase for granted is never a good thing. I get the sense they feel we'll just buy anything they put out because it's a Bioware product.
Not anymore.
You can release a game that pleases your fans and do very well without gimmicks and empty promises. Look at Skyrim. It has sold around 10 to 11 MILLION COPIES....and counting and it's STILL in keeping with the ideas of the series. No multiplayer. No double talk from Todd Howard. No need for PR damage control. No list of contradictory statements to throw back at devs. Instead of multiplayer...we got The Creation Kit. Need I say more?
If this was all intentionally planned to push DLC, it's a very dangerous game to play. I can't see how ANYONE at Bioware would think these endings would be widely accepted by most when you take into account how deeply invested fans have been with the series. They seem designed to be controversial.
Unless they have something truly spectacular.....like the series deserves, waiting in the wings, this whole situation and all the bad press it has generated, not to mention what it has done to a considerable amount of fans, is only going to hurt Bioware in the end.
