What is this whole 'speculation equals good story' mentality in writers these days? Sometimes, SOMETIMES it works, I'll grant you. But not often. Now many writers in major medias do really good work, then fark it all to hell with the last minute inclusion of some 'speculative material'.
Christ, I hope the lesson is learned from this.
Did you laugh or cry when you saw this?

There isn't anything directly wrong with this. In fact this is exactly how brainstorming should be done.
However, it should NOT be the final product. Unfortunately, as we all know, this WAS the final product.

In process notes are... normally messy. I had no problem with this, except the confirmation that the ending we had wasn't genius (indoctrinate players - then reveal the truth!) but rather incompetence.
That, however, was a real problem.

I can't fathom why nobody said anything or even tried to come up with better ideas.

Probably not, the Dragon Age team will do the exact same thing with DA3 except it will be even worse and even more aburpt. One minute everyone is alive the next they'll all be dead and the player character will listen to a demon rabble on about nonsense then the player character will just commit suicide because there's only one option and that's suicide. Then in leiu of credits the game will just open the DLC marketplace and charge your credit card $10 for a hat to use on your next playthrough.

"Shepard alive- sense of hope"
This ending, often called the best possible ending, involves Shepard nearly dead stranded in another solar system from his crew, friends, and any loved ones, after having destroyed galactic civilization and possibly every solar system a mass effect relay was located in. Oh and either Tali and Garrus die on the new world or the rest of the crew does, dextro based science babble. Lastly, Shepard apparently killed every synthetic, including apparently EDI and the geth, even if he managed to make peace between them, so basically he just managed to do the opposite of the reapers, but genocide is genocide.
All this is supposed to give us hope? Wow............ just wow. Maybe Bioware just didn't think about any of the ramifications or implications, and just assumed as long as Shepard was alive everything would be fine. Seriously though, if that ending was supposed to convey hope, he should stop writing. That is just....... wow.

And here I always thought you only could be a writer if you knew your audience well. Apparently I was wrong.

Usually, brainstorming note is supposed to be fairly off.. in terms of providing logical pathways and whatnot.
The problem with this note is that pretty much anything that's been on the note has been shown up in the ending with absolutely no attempts to figure out the proper logical pathway. Furthermore, another criticism is that this clearly shows that the story-writers have treated the ending part as a completely different entity instead of treating it as an extension to the overall story and handle it seriously.
All I can say is that this brainstorming note reminds me of this,
A) Yay! I got an idea that I wanna talk about on my essay!
Time to write! write write write..
C) Oh [s]! None of the stuff I've written really fits what I was going to say in the conclusion!
D) Oh well! I guess I will simply have to try fit the conclusion and the rest of the paper together because that's what I was going to talk about and who cares about the rest of the paper?
E) *The teacher gives you D as a grade for your broken essay.*
