Only it doesnt seem possible to get more than one per playthru, and even then its near the end and youve probably already got the standard Widow and Carnifax

so how much better are they? do they come into their own on higher difficulties?

I was able to buy two on my initial playthrough. I guess it just depends on your playstyle. I use the Wraith all the time in MP, but I haven't decided whether to use it or not in my SP Vanguard playthrough.

For a class that relies on heavy pistols, the Paladin can be an interesting addition.

Those are the two I used in-game so far. You can usually afford one pretty early on if you are doing a full completion run.

Not sure about the Black Widow, but the Paladin is definitely worth it if you use a pistol. It's easily the best pistol in the game. Head and Shoulders above the Carnifex. The Black Widow is heavy, but it plays like a Mantis with 3 shots. I can't tell you how it compares on the Battle Field, because I've just done Vanguard runs. No sniper rifles for me.

what do you mean...did you save up or find a large source of credits? I only seemed to average about 10-20k creds per mission

I had 200k credits, and then for some reason after Cerberus HQ I got set back to 100k. Not cool.

Dunno. Managed to get about half the upgrades, all the armor, and two of the Spectre weapons on my first playthrough. Seems to me I bought the Paladin about halfway through the game.

I've only tried the Wraith, and that's clearly the best shotgun in the game. The Claymore has a higher damage output, but it comes at a huge weight penalty. I wouldn't say you absolutely need it, though, so whether it's worth all the other stuff you could buy for over 200K creds... that's a different story.

The N7 shotgun in better IMHO. Only issue with it is the weight.

^ Which is why many of us prefer the Wraith.

My aim is... less than great, so I prefer the Black Widow.

N7 Shotgun + full suit of Rosenkov materials = Fun time for Vanguard.

^ I guess I see what you mean. I like to mix and match my armor a bit more then that. And even with the bonuses, I still prefer the Wraith. Personal preference.

All the Spectre weapons are excellent.

Or you could take weapon damage boosts with a shotgun that doesn't gimp your cooldowns quite so heavily?  I mean, it's not like you need to be sniping with a shotgun as a vanguard.

I felt like I wasted money on the Paladin. Maybe cause I got it so late in the game. But I upgraded and moded the Scorpion very early on and it did much more damage and was much more fun in general IMHO...

I am a major sniper type and the Black Widow was completely worth it. Lower level enemies were blown apart in one shot, others in 2 or 3. It is by far my favorite sniper rife.

In SP, the Black Widow is the way to go if you're an infiltrator. I used a Valiant for most of the game and the Black Widow is like a Valiant on steroids... steroids laced with meth.

I love the Black Widow and the Paladin. Haven't been able to purchase the Wraith yet, but I hear it's more than worth the price.

It's a very versatile weapon. My favourite shotgun. You literally stated what I mean in your sentence there.

I'm not following you.

Sure, it's versatile because of the range, but for the weight (2.5!) you could easily take a better close range shotgun and a carnifex/paladin. I don't understand why people think they can't take more than one weapon even with the weight system.

If you scan new systems as they appear you can usually find extra credits in some and assets.

I found the Black Widow to be very useful in my initial playthrough (soldier on hardcore). Yeah, it's heavy and doesn't do any more damage per-shot than the other high-level sniper rifles, but being able to fire off three shots in one Adrenaline Rush was worth it.

Black Widow is worth it, three shots per clip makes all the difference.
Pistol is meh and I like Geth shotgun much more.

I honestly don't see how anything but the damage to weight ratio really matters. With Wraith + Vindicator and a few bonuses here and there my Vanguard character's power cooldown is so fast that I can practically just spam Charge. Upgrade it to include a shield boost and you're basically invincible.

Just finishing an Infiltrator run now. The Black Widow is well worth it. Three high power shots in rapid succession takes the target out of your way pretty fast.

If you can only afford Widow or Wraith, go Widow. There are shottys at least as good, just different. The Graal Spike Thrower is high damage, double barrell with faster standard reload than the Claymore.

The Disciple is a great weapon, too. Less power per shot than Wraith or Graal, but makes up for it with 4 rounds before reload and fast firing.

That and it's super light.
