For a class that relies on heavy pistols, the Paladin can be an interesting addition.
Those are the two I used in-game so far. You can usually afford one pretty early on if you are doing a full completion run.

I was able to buy two on my initial playthrough. I guess it just depends on your playstyle. .
what do you mean...did you save up or find a large source of credits? I only seemed to average about 10-20k creds per mission

Dunno. Managed to get about half the upgrades, all the armor, and two of the Spectre weapons on my first playthrough. Seems to me I bought the Paladin about halfway through the game.

My aim is... less than great, so I prefer the Black Widow.

N7 Shotgun + full suit of Rosenkov materials = Fun time for Vanguard.

Or you could take weapon damage boosts with a shotgun that doesn't gimp your cooldowns quite so heavily? I mean, it's not like you need to be sniping with a shotgun as a vanguard.N7 Shotgun + full suit of Rosenkov materials = Fun time for Vanguard.

It's a very versatile weapon. My favourite shotgun. You literally stated what I mean in your sentence there.

Sure, it's versatile because of the range, but for the weight (2.5!) you could easily take a better close range shotgun and a carnifex/paladin. I don't understand why people think they can't take more than one weapon even with the weight system.

I honestly don't see how anything but the damage to weight ratio really matters. With Wraith + Vindicator and a few bonuses here and there my Vanguard character's power cooldown is so fast that I can practically just spam Charge. Upgrade it to include a shield boost and you're basically invincible.

If you can only afford Widow or Wraith, go Widow. There are shottys at least as good, just different. The Graal Spike Thrower is high damage, double barrell with faster standard reload than the Claymore.
The Disciple is a great weapon, too. Less power per shot than Wraith or Graal, but makes up for it with 4 rounds before reload and fast firing.
That and it's super light.
