Black Widow is alright if you want more than one shot per clip, but honestly, the Widow and the Javelin are better, especially for squadmates, who have infinite ammo.

I bought the Black Widow, but I've never actually used it. Garrus has an upgraded Widow (and infinite ammo), I've got an upgraded Javelin (with free scope mod effect), and I've never felt an absolute need to fire more than once per reload as long as I stick to headshots.

What?  The black widow destroys the widow and the javelin.  On insanity the fact that damage doesn't bleed through defenses makes the extra damage from the widow and javelin useless (since you'll always need at least two shots to kill).  Meanwhile, standard enemies without protection get one shotted either way, so 3 shots from the BW means 3 dead enemies vs 1.  Vs single hard targets (brutes, banshees, Atlas) the black widow has much higher dps since you don't have to reload after every shot.

There's literally not a single scenario where the Widow/Javelin are better than BW.  It's not even close.

I don't play Insanity, so I can't comment, but on lower difficulties, a Javelin headshot with maxed out Disruptor Ammo, extended barrel mod, and spare thermal clip mod (never run out of ammo in a firefight, ever), wearing Kuwashii Visor + Hahne-Kedar Chest + Armax Aresenal Shoulders + Armax Aresenal Arms + Hahne-Kedar Legs (for +30% headshot damage, +35% weapon damage) pretty much always results in 1S1K. For me, the Javelin wins over other sniper rifles because it essentially comes with a free Scope effect in addition to the piercing, so both mod slots are left for other mods. Very versatile weapon.

The Paladin is definitely worth it, as is the Wraith. Both of them at level 10, they are as light as a feather, and deadly as a head-on collision.

It takes Insanity/Gold to fully appreciate Black Widow. Let me quote here:

For Shields and Barriers

"There is a new mechanic for shields and barriers in ME3, which we call the shield gate. Whenever an enemy shield/barrier is destroyed (last point taken off), the rest of the damage that passes through to the health/armor is cut by X%, where X is:

50% on Normal/Bronze
75% on Hardcore/Silver
100% on Insanity/Gold

This means that if an enemy has a single sliver of shields on Insanity/Gold, any weapon bullet will only take the remaining point off, and then a second bullet is required to start damaging the health/armor. This means that even the most powerful sniper rifle will take 2 shots to kill any shielded enemy on Insanity/Gold.

Personally, I like the Paladin, so was happy when I got it in multiplayer.

I was able to buy two on my initial playthrough. I guess it just depends on your playstyle. .

what do you mean...did you save up or find a large source of credits? I only seemed to average about 10-20k creds per mission

Credits are not hard to come by at all. I did all the side missions and ended up with 578,100 credits by the end of the game. Having upgraded various weapons to level V.

I had 200k credits, and then for some reason after Cerberus HQ I got set back to 100k. Not cool.

That's... really weird. I just checked my pre-Cerberus HQ and post game saves.

Pre: 578,100. Post: 503,100. I'm 99% sure I didn't buy anything new/upgrade anything between the two saves, so 75,000 credits has randomly disappeared?

And that's exactly why the Valiant is better than the Black Widow (on Insanity. I actually didn't know this gating mechanic didn't happen on lower difficulties). Kills enemies in the same numbers of headshots, shoots faster, reloads faster, weighs less, costs nothing.

Actually... I'm starting to wonder if a fully upgraded, damage-modded Viper in the hands of an Infiltrator might also be able to achieve oneshots on mooks, twoshots on shielded. If it can, I'd say that might be better than the Black Widow too.

The black widow can kill mooks with body shots. It's also much better against armored targets as you get the cloak bonus for all three shots (each of which do almost twice the damage). The reload speed can be mitigated by the various form of animation canceling. The cost is a non-issue if you're doing the optional missions/planet scanning. I was rolling in cash by about halfway through the game.

Really, the only drawback is the weight, which is less of an issue on an infiltrator because your cloak cooldown's proportional to how much time you spend in cloak (and most of the time you'll break cloak almost immediately to fire).

What Athenau said - bodyshots. I'm playing only MP after my 1st run of SP, so usually do not have the luxury of aiming for head - and Valiant, despite being highly favored by me and currently used, takes up to 3 bodyshots on Silver to bring down Cannibals. Naturally, if you're playing SP, you have different priorities.

Also please remember that only Collector Edition buyers have Valiant in SP and 25% of Goliath winners in MP, while BW is available to everyone.
Edit: And I have no idea how one can get higher levels of Valiant and other N7 gear in MP, making it less and less competitive while you progress.

I must say I miss the ME1 spectre gear. Was so good. When I saw the computer I thought there would be a super weapon for each category there but nope...] Great weapons, just not for every class.

I've played infiltrator in insanity and my weapon of choice was the black widow. Didn't need to use any other weapon. The only bad thing is the weight, but upgrading it to level X helped on that aspect.

I'm trying to decide whether my caster Sentinel, normally using a Vindi only, should buy a Paladin or get the Black Widow for Garrus. Early enough in game that Garrus could get some decent use out of it, but not sure if I want to try the Paladin first.

I found myself using the wraith and paladin on my last adept play through. Absolutely worth it.

I'm hearing a lot of love for the Wraith on here. Is it really that good? I didn't think a shotty with 2 rounds in the clip would do much.

Hell, it looks heavier than the scimitar. Which I *already* have issues fitting into my arsenal.

It's got insane burst damage for how light it is (1.5, same as the scimitar), a quick reload, and excellent accuracy for a shotgun. It's very good in the hands of an infiltrator because of the great synergy with cloak. How it works for a vanguard or a soldier, I don't know.

I went with the Paladin with my caster sentinel. I upgraded it to level 5. It has good reserve now. I used it with the Disciple shotgun and it works wonderfully when used sparingly.

I'll probably go for the Wraith in the NG+. Warp + shotgun + throw (if needed) seems to work great on hardcore when mobs get too close. piercing + high caliber barrel.
