Kaiden was already LC in ME2, so doesn't he outrank shepard now?

are there any scenes in the game where kaiden mentions being shepard's superior?

ps. Kaiden becomes a spectre too, at which point he should be addressed "sir" by Shepard.

I think Shepard was made a full Commander as per Andersen's orders during the prologe, so Shep would have the same rank + some seniority given his N7 status.

Nope. When I hit Q/E, he still goes to where I tell him.

N7 + 1st Human Spectre

This gives Symbolism. In terms of recognition and influence. Shepard "Outanks" Hackett

For some reason Shepard gets screwed and never promoted. You would think being the first human spectre would be worth a promotion as would saving the galaxy from sovereign at the very least.

And technically, Kaiden out ranks Shepard in ME3.

Edit: In straight up Alliance regs, Kaiden is higher up. The Spectre Status and N7 designation would give Shepard more influence and pull.

I wondered this, too, honestly. Unless Commander Shepard is actually Captain or Admiral Shepard now, it seems like Kaiden should be a higher rank... Not sure, really.

Shepard has Naval ranking so Commander is superior to a Major in the Marines/Army/Whatever Kaidan is.

Read that somewhere last night, so I'm paraphrasing here.

it was discussed a while ago. no sure if shep got a promotion or not, but even if so kaiden, still outrank him/her as a major, but: 1) shepard's a spectre, and 2) kaiden's a marine whereas shepard is in the navy, and is in charge of the ship in question, so while kaiden is stationed on the normandy, he answers to shepard.

He may be a higher rank within the Alliance, but Shepard's spectre status throws that out the window.

According to the codex, Major is above Lieutenant Commander.

A major is an O-4 pay grade in the army, putting him on par with Ashley in terms of ranking, as Lt Commander is also O-4, but is a navy rank. Commander is an O-5 rank, meaning, he's higher. Or atleast that's how I think it works.

Shepard was a full Commander per Anderson at the beginning of ME3. On board ship, it's Shepard's ship. After meeting with Udina Shepard's back as a Spectre and has seniority in that department.

Think this has nailed it. Pretty sure thats true too

Edit: just double checked - a commander in the navy is 1 pay grade higher than than a major in either the marines or the army. According the the US defense department anyhoo.

Alliance ranks work differently from current military ranks. Major is the equivalent of Naval Captain. Therefore, Kaidan outranks Shepard. However when he comes back onboard the Normandy, he's willingly agreeing to come back under Shepard's command.

Yep, which makes Shepard the equivalent to a Lt. Colonel.

Not sure why Shepard was never promoted to Captain (the rank, not the job).

"Technically" speaking he is but since Shepard is a damn hero and more symbolic and significant to the war that I would even go as far as she outranking Hackett in that regard.
However, Kaidan goes where I tell him to go and do what I tell him to do so.....hehe<3:devil:

Regardless of his military rank, Shepard is a Spectre. He doesn't have to take orders from anyone but the council.

Unless he wants to play nice with the Alliance Types.

It's Systems Alliance ranks. It's not the U.S. military or anything like that. The codex is our only real source.

In the Navy, it doesn't matter if you outrank a CO, he's still the commanding officer of the ship. Therego, his word is still law.

When I served on a carrier, there were numerous other officers with the rank of Captain, as well as several Marine Colonels. But there was only one CO, and it was his orders that you followed above all else.

A Commander is about the same rank as a Lt. Colonel. Lt. Commander is the same rank as a Major. Also Shepard is a full Commander. Even if he was just a Lt. Commander he is still the acting CO of the operation. Thus giving rank over other officer of similiar rank while under his command.

Also he is the CO of the Normandy, which gives him authority over the vessel and those that serve aboard it.

This is not just the US, Canada, England, France, even German. Though the rank names do change to the native language have their equivilents pretty clear. The System Alliance is from Earth.

Are the ranks ever explicitly spelled out? They aren't in ME3.

They are in ME1's codex I think.
