Kaiden: sorry sir, didn't meant to keep you out of the loop.(before shepard reinstated as spectre)

I understand differing, but this? O_O?

lol. Kaiden is dead, because I found him incredibly annoying. Especially when, in my first playthrough I let him live and I got Ren points for telling people I really didn't care that his feelings were hurt. The irony is my Shep is also dead know. And death is the great equalizer

Kaiden was already LC in ME2, so doesn't he outrank shepard now?

are there any scenes in the game where kaiden mentions being shepard's superior?

ps. Kaiden becomes a spectre too, at which point he should be addressed "sir" by Shepard.

On paper, it at first seems that he should outrank Shepard, but its not that simple.

I think once Spectre status gets involved, military rank kind of goes out the window. As a Spectre neither Admiral Hackett nor any other Alliance officer has any real legal authority over Shepard, who answers directly to the Citadel Council. Frankly, if you had your Spectre status reinstated in ME2, its a bit of a plothole that Shepard could even be arrested and tried by Alliance officials for the events of 'Arrival'.
And once Kaidan gets instated as a Spectre himself, his military rank becomes purely symbolic. If a Spectre is not legally compelled to follow the directions of anyone other than the Council, then they technically aren't actively serving in the military. All that matters is that they are both Spectres, and that Shepard has seniority, I would presume.

There is no rank just called "Commander."

The rank is not always hyphenate, it does exist on it's own. But in navel terms it's appropriate for shepard because he becomes the commander of a frigate (one of three real classes of ship a commander would have.)

The only ranks with the word "commander" in them are Staff Commander and Lieutenent Commander.  This is not the United States military, as I've said multiple times.  Please consult the codex from the first game.  It has been quoted several times in this thread.

It's wrong then. Bioware apparently (probably unintentionally) retconned the ranks. Shepard is explicitly reinstated as "Commander". Not a single person in ME3 ever refers to Shepard as Lt. Commander. People do refer to Ashley as Lt. Commander.

That or the e-mail was wrong.  A distinct possibility, considering the circumstances.

Just because they are spectres does not mean they don't have to follow the alliance rules and/or orders for as long they are serving the alliance. They are still connected and don't stand "above" the alliance. So no their titles are not symbolic and they are still serving the military.

I thought Anderson promoted him to being Full Commander in the prologue by throwing him the dogtags.

Well either way, Normandy is Shepard's ship and crew is under his command, that includes Kaiden.

Not necessarily. I agree that its a little stupid that no one ever refers to Shepard as Lt. Commander, but its not like anyone ever calls him Staff Commander, either. Ashley ,ay get referred to as the former, but Kaidan got referred to as the latter in ME2 when you go visit Anderson.

No.

He uses the word 'reinstated'. There's no room for interpretation there.

Sure, but that doesn't explain no one referring to Shepard as Lt., while they do with Ashley.

There are only about six people who saved Ashley.  I didn't even realize that was a serious option until my fifth playthrough.

If I remember correctly, Kaidan even outranked Shepard in ME2 because he was promoted to Staff Commander whereas Shepard is only Lieutenant Commander. Then in ME3 he became Major and by Alliance Military standards, yes he out ranks Shepard (again).

By ME3 Ashley is the same rank as Shepard.

Only difference is that Shepard is still a badass for being an N7 since according to the lore, even if you were an N1 you gain a lot of respect due to the program being ridiculously tough.

Still, Shepard's the one who is in command of the Normandy so regardless of rank he/she is the commanding officer over Kaidan/Ashley.

Alliance ranks work differently from current military ranks. Major is the equivalent of Naval Captain. Therefore, Kaidan outranks Shepard. However when he comes back onboard the Normandy, he's willingly agreeing to come back under Shepard's command.

This.

Already saved Ashley once on Eden Prime. She rearched my Shepard's pre-set saving limit. Also, Kaiden (while boring as sin) out-ranks her. Military protocal demands I save him. Furthermore, Ashley with her "hair did" and bellyshirts  in ME3 is just embarassing. Better to die on Virmire.

Psh, Kaiden. If I had saved Kaiden on Virmire, then how would I be able to witness the sexy magic BioWare did to Ashley in ME3?

Oh the cruelty!

But um... I kind of saved kaiden too in most of my playthroughs. Must be something like 8 playthroughs saving her twice or so :P

IN ME1 he's the Commanding Officer of the Normandy(He's under Captain Anderson command) until he's given  full privelege of command after being named a spectre ( Udina give him a ship and a screw ) . At this point he don't answer to the Alliance anymore . Just to the Council  and 'Udina' to some degree.

In Mass effect 2 .. He's not even an Alliance anymore. He's a Terrorist working for Cerberus but giving full command of his crew.

In ME3 he's given back his specter status and his alliance Rank. He's again tthe Co of his operation and a Specter.
Kaiden outrank him but the second he choose to join shepard he become his subordinates.
