How to move all the game files to another location than the C drive?

I've tried to search for this issue which I'm sure must already have been adressed somewhere, but can't find it. Maybe I'm not searching for the right words, who knows.  So please excuse me if I should happen to ask an old question...

Anyway.  I have the retail version of the game - physical disc.  When I installed the game, it didn't give me a choice where to install it, it simply installed to my C drive.  I have external hard drives that I use for all my games, and strictly reserve my C drive for my operation system (Vista) and programs related to this.  The size of my C drive is rather small, scaled to this particular use, and is in no shape or form intended to house and run a big game on... especially when it grows larger with every savegame I make.

When a big game like DAO automatically installs itself there, PLUS places downloadable additions there AND all the savegames etc, my computer gets in trouble, and DAO has now reached a size where it frequently results in slowdowns and crashes.  While I strongly resent programs/games that doesn't let me choose what drive and folder to install them to, I resent even more when they place game files all over the drive in various folders, making it very difficult to locate them and move them over to the L drive where they SHOULD have been in the first place.

Have anyone found out how to move the game and all its associated folders/files over to another drive on the same computer?  Do anyone know what folders I need to move and where they are located on my C drive?  How do I tell the game to start saving games to a designated folder of my choosing?  How much manual tinkering is necessary to clear my C drive (so my pc can run normally again) while ensuring that the game will continue to run without problems from my L drive - and SAVE to my L drive?  Simply put - how do I do it?

You have to select something during the install, I think called Customize Install, in order to be able to select the location. But it is definitely there.

I didn't get that option. I'm always very particular to make sure games install to my external drives, but DAO didn't bring up the screen where you can pick the location for the installation.

Do you know what folders I need to move over to my L drive, and how to tell the game to start saving to L instead of C?

Or do you mean I have to uninstall everything and reinstall, starting all over again?  I don't want to lose my savegames and DLC, and I don't even know where they are located.

The save games are not stored under the game install, but under My Documents (XP) or Documents (Vista).
As for you not getting an option to change install location I believe you've missed something. Make a backup of the BioWare/Dragon Age directory under Documents and uninstall/re-install the game. ;)

your savegames should be in your mydocument/bioware/dragon age/characters folder as well as your dlc in addins instead of characters. If you keep this folder during uninstallation you should be fine (or make a backup).

If you copy your files to another disc you have to change all dragon age related registry entries according to the new drive location. I don't recommend to do it. Maybe you miss something or mess sth. up in your registry. So a complete reinstallation might be the best to do.

If I reinstall the game to a folder on my L drive and start playing it from there, where will it place the savegames? Will there be a Savegames folder in the game folder I make on the L drive, or will savegames still go to My Documents on C? (And give me the same problem with space again?) Where should I place my old backup-ed savegames so I can start playing it again? Back in My Documents on C? Can I create a new file called My Documents in the game folder for them, or do I somehow need to find and change the path the game uses for its savegames to make it save to L drive?

Your save games will still be loaded (and saved) from your My Documents folder.

But if you're that worried about space on your main system drive, you're bound to have changed the drive your My Documents folder resides on, right?

To change your Documents folder path, right click Documents from the Start Menu and select Properties. This opens the Properties dialog box for the Documents folder. Click the Location tab and type in the path to the location where you want to store the folder. Click OK. If the folder location you specified in the Target field does not exist, the Create Message dialog box will appear. Click Yes to create the folder and click OK. Alternatively, you can also select the Move button from the Location tab and browse to the location where you want to store the Documents folder.

Hmm... the issue with the My Documents folder is that I've never used it. Whenever I create documents of various kinds, I save them to folders designated to the particular topic my docs are created for. Just like I have designated folders for my pictures and other files that commonly are placed on C drive. After having lost all documents and photos and such a few times with hard drive crashes, I now always save them on separate drives and don't use those my docs/photos/downloads etc. folders.

Doesn't matter if you personally use your documents folder but Dragon Age does.
