We kill you so you don't kill yourselves.

Brilliant!

Also, why bother to fight anyways? It all ends in tragedy.

This is still the same story that was released and still terrible. Obviously, they wanted a god-like, choose the destiny of the universe type theme, but abandoned everything that Mass Effect built up for three games and abandoned the idea that your choices matter.

You unite the Geth with the Quarians only to destroy all Geth??? WHAT?????

You help EDI develope into a fuller and more complete being with humanity only to kill her??? WHAT????

You can become the Dark Lords of all that you are fighting against???? WHAT?????

You can make all beings 1/2 computer, 1/2 alive??? With zero explanation??? WHAT????

Talk about kicking your audience in the gut, an audience who you let control the outcome of your story up until the epic fail of a conclusion.

So the Protheans were able to corrupt the keepers to not open the Citadel as a mass relay through which the Reapers could pour through. And the Catalyst, which controls the reapers and IS the citadel, and is a billions year old (probably billions, the Leviathon of Dis was said to be almost 1 billion years old) AI, was like: Yeah, I'm ok with this.

Ok, so with this script in mind I re-watched the ending movies. The Citadel and Mass Relays both survive in the Blue ending, the relay stops moving but it does not explode (so it may be repairable). The green and one does still destroy them though.

Its not different, just a view more lines of dialogue. The ending would still be terrible and full of plotholes.

There's a subltey to this ending that I found lacking in the original game. I would've been far more okay with these options, as opposed to what was presented in the final product.

By including destruction of the mass relays in -all- the endings, it created a situation where the player is hard pressed to tell the difference between the presented options. It lent a feeling of hopelessness and dustructiveness that seemed somewhat out of place.

The ending dialogue laid out above shows some very different options.

By taking the destruction path you would be destroying the reapers, the relays, and all Mass Effect technology. You're working along the lines that Legion had laid out in ME2 and breaking away from what Soverign had talked about ME1. You're forsaking all technology associated with the Reapers and the civilization repsonsible for them. You're deciding that the galaxy needs to progress along its own lines, with its own technology without taking a gift, inadvertantly as it was, from the "old machines". I don't know how terribly interesting the possible expansions or DLCs would be from this ending, that said, it still leaves the possibility for a more 'wild west' feel Mass Effect release down the road.

In this method, the green option allows for a commonality between man and machine. Maybe its what the civilization that created the Reapers had been trying to do, but was unable to. Maybe Harbinger was the result of their attempts. Maybe they started to lay the groundwork for the crucible eons ago and as each civilization that could understand it, started to work on it, they added their own modifications, until it reached a point where a species -was- able to complete it and thus, a non-horrific synthesis of organic and synthetic life is possible. There won't be a singularity, because well, everyone will be the best of both worlds... or would they? This could lead to some very interesting oppurtunities for a new game or expansion. Everything happy-robo-unicorns and cupcakes... or is it, certainly groups like TerraFirma or their alien counter-parts wouldn't take this well.

The control option is interesting, especially because it specifically states that Shepard would become the new catalyst, this would explain why one of the biggest differences between this ending and the counter-part that we received, is the citadel not being destroyed. It's also intersting because it allows Shepard the option of "continuing the cycle as you see fit", with the implication to me of "well, we're going to give you the reigns, but we're pretty sure you're going to come around to our way of thinking eventually". Again, same as above, this could lead to some very interesting continuations. What happens when Shepard realizes that the peace he had hoped for only works under certain circumstances, what happens when he realizes the Reapers are right?

That said, some form of epilogue besides "buy more DLC" would've been nice.

I'm sorry but this still isn't a good conclusion. It disregards the entirely of the previous games and decisions and forces us into the Deus Ex model, and leaves us pondering the fate of the characters we actually care about, instead giving us this 'star child'.

The bottom line to me is this:

1. The endings are quite disappointing.

2. Better endings most certainly could have been written.

3. I really wish they would have consulted and utilized some good authors. They need not have even been Sci-Fi writers. Any good author would quickly see that these endings would disappoint millions, and they could have assisted them with coming up with endings much richer and fulfilling.

Here's hoping for alternate endings. I really would like it if my friends who are going to play don't have to experience the emotional trauma and loathing I experienced tonight :|

In part because some people have said this ending is better, I'm curious how people would feel if they'd put this back in as part of the EC.

I'd agree it's a bit less worse, but that doesn't mean it's good. There are still plot holes, it's still "thematically revolting" and contradicts the series' attitude and tone prior, and only has three choices (with nothing else but the EMS being relevant, still).

So... it was Torch the Franchise and run like hell as I have suspected.

They threw some crap together just to get this whole thing over with... in short they did not care about the franchise anymore.
