Best party combos - excluding Dog, Morrigan and Alistair

I'd like to build a three-mage, one-tank party, but since Morrigan is so...Morrigan and Alistair is so...Alistair, I don't want to build a decent group that will be impossible to take with me in the end.
Anyone else have any ideas for a decent group build, hopefully at least one rogue, PC or NPC in there, I can't bear not picking locks.
My preference would be for my PC to be the rogue, but if two mages are impossible to pass up, I'll listen to that too. Ideas?
PC Arcane Warrior/Spirit healer
Wynne same
Sten respec to tank
Leliana rogue
That has the benefit of being easy to establish early. It's tough to use Zev because there's no point in building up Lel to cover for him and then swapping her out.
PC rogue
Wynne Arcane warrior/Spirit healer
Sten respec to tank
Oghren respec to tank
Ideas and strategy recommendations? Thanks!

Just summon the Dalish or the mages once the Archdemon goes out of range, and occupy yourself with keeping the darkspawn under control until he gets back to where you can beat him down normally.

You don't need to have every member of your party able to attack at range for the final battle.

I know I don't have to, but I like the utility. There's the arcane horror in Brecilian also that you need range.
Half the time it's just me plugging away at the archdemon anyway at that point. You can't control where the mages or the Dalish are going to spawn, and usually it's....out of range. Oh look, they're there...at the ready....on the other side.
Just trying to plan ahead.

PC: Anything
Shale: Stone Aura
Lelilanna: Captivating Song
Wynne: Cleansing Aura, Haste, Miasma
Shale and Leliana mitigate damage along with Wynnes Miasma, Wynne heals whatever gets through with the health pulse from Cleansing Aura. And your PC Mage, Rogue, DW Warrior or 2handed or whatever, brings the pain. My first playthrough used this setup and it worked pretty good.

My recommendation would be Shale, two mages, and Leliana. Keep the mages inside the aura and things will go fine - have one mage focus on healing, while you and leliana deal with darkspawn. If you're concerned about the armies not doing what you want them to, toss a Storm of the Century or other big DoT the archdemon's way every now or then.

Cool, thanks! That's the sort of thing I was looking for.
I've only played through on easy settings, so I'm trying to focus more on some tactics and polish up a nice group early on in the game that I can set a course for and stick to it.

Indeed. Shale specced for Stone Aura is amazing.

Okay. I'm going to do one run through as a mage and one as a rogue. I need to pick up all of Slim's and the Crows' quests, but I haven't really played with arcane warrior yet either, so I'll do both.
The tactics advice is great, thank you.
