With the goal to help me and all the other players out there who have the same problems like me, I would like to start this thread in order to create a short guide that is supposed to prepare people for a gold match or tell them to stay away if they can't match the requirements.
Point 1: Character Selection.
Do you know the main strength of your character as it is intended and did you effectively skill and equip your character to make use of those strengths?
Adept:
- No heavy weapons, best would be a carnifex or paladin
- constantly use abilities for crowd control
- Use biotic explosions for heavy damage on big enemies
- You are squishy so be aware of your surrounding
- never leave the safety of the group
- Asari or Drell preferred (Asari with Stasis Bubble)
- Inflict heavy damage on single targets
- Use your cloak smart and you will never die
- Equip the biggest sniper you can find and nothing else.Widow preferred.
- Revive mates and capture spots undetected.
- Always shoot the most dangerous target on the field. (phantom>turrets>Atlas>.... orbanshee>Ravager>Brute....)
- You are the one in charge of reviving so make sure you aren't the one dying all the time!!!
- Against Geth take a Quarian Infiltrator due to the Sabotage ability
- Immortal if played right
- don't get too far away from the group if you don’t want to die alone on the far side of the map
- As the tank you draw fire and take all the punishment while your team can fire unbothered
- Take only a pistol or shotgun as a weapon.
- Being nearly immortal is fun but don't let it get into your head. A bunch of atlas or phantoms will kill you if you like it or not so don't get overconfident.
- Heavy Damage with Tech Bursts.
- Constantly use Decoys/turrets to provide a distraction and effectivly take away a portion of the incoming damage.
- Only equip one Weapon. Tech Bursts are too important to limit them with a heavy loadout.
- Salarian Engineer preffered because his decoy proves to be the most distracting.
The Sentinel class can essentially take every role they want but less effective so I don't care about them. Maybe somebody else will want to write something about them.

Point 2: Enemies.
Every enemy species has its own strength and on gold you get slapped by it in the face. So did you choose your class, skills, loadout according to a role that is needed against the chosen enemy?
Cerberus: turrets, atlas, phantom...
Reapers: Ravager, Brutes, Banshee...
Geth: Hunter, Pyro, Prime...
If you didn't think about how to take down those enemies quickly or simply aren't able to, then you won’t help your team at all. Sitting in a corner shooting swarmers with a standard rifle isn't considered a valuable addition to a team!!!
If your team gets wiped out then you have lost the round and people lose equipment and not to mention valuable time but a team doesn't get killed by a simple soldier but rather by those special enemies so find a way to deal with those enemies quickly or don't join gold games.
For example:
Phantom:
- M-37 Falcon knocks them back, rendering them unable to attack
- Adept stasis bubbles can trap them, making them a target for infiltrators or biotic explosions
- If you attack a phantom then go all the way or else they cloak and recharge or even get immune to stasis bubbles.
- Infiltrators should be patient and try to hit the head since it boosts the damage significantly.
- The long range attack nearly instantly kills so get to cover but don't forget to get moving again before they get too close.
- Just avoid them until other threats are dealt with since they are really slow and you can just dodge the rockets as opposed to a phantoms sword.
- Destroy any of the following to do a small damage spike (shoulder flanges, groin plate, knee plates)
- Don’t waste rockets unless you really have to and if you have to then try to hit multiple targets. Usually not before level 6 best would be to wait until level 10.
- If you aren't an infiltrator or have biotic/tech explosions then don't waste your ammo and get rid of smaller fries first.
- Don't run away if they aren't standing right next to you. Just wait for the charge and then dodge.
- 2 Biotic/tech explosions are enough to kill one on gold so don't waste your ammo.
- Reapers are a noisy folk. In a big fight you sometimes don't hear them in the crowd so check your back from time to time.
- Armour Plates absorb damage until breaking (best to aim for exposed flesh, probably base of the neck?)
- Immediately focus everything on them to prevent them from getting charged. Meaning they won’t be able to throw those nasty energy balls or get immune to tech/bio explosions.
- Always stay in motion so that they can't grab you or get you with their nova attack. Explosions seem to work best so far since they are moving too much.
- A single adept can kill her in around 10 seconds so make sure to have one on the team.
- I've seen many banshees hump the salarian decoy which then stops the rapid movement.
- No weak points (aim for the belly, as it's fattest - most likely to hit it)
- Extremely deadly if they hit you but slow and show targeting lasers before shooting. Getting to cover is advised.
- Since they are slow they only pose a threat if they actually get in line of sight so try to get out of their sight until you have dealt with bigger threats or have to move through their perimeter.
- They have heavy armor so use big guns or explosions.
- Don't forget to look out for the acid after you killed them.
- Swarmers are only dangerous in larger groups so don't waste time/ammo if you don't need to.
There are certain reasons why people call that a cooperative game so play like you know what that means. Having a headset is nice but if everyone knows what he's doing it won’t be necessary at all.
- Never leave the group unless you are an Infiltrator and want to stealth capture something. Enemy damage will be divided and reviving will be quick. In Short Terms: everyone gets to come home.
- Try to stay near ammunition spots with your group since on gold you run out constantly. But don't run to them if the heat is way too high, the way to it is blocked or you would have to abandon your team for some time because the next spot is far away. Ammunition packs are piling up anyway so use them.
- Having med packs to revive you in sticky situations is nice but not dying in the first place is much nicer. Ops Survival packs are an awesome way to survive since you don't just drop dead but you have blocks at the end of your shield and health, giving you a short time to pop them in and survive. If you end a game with more survival packs left then med packs then you're doing it wrong.
- Getting overrun is very deadly so don't shoot in the same direction as your mates but rather make sure that every direction is covered.
- Don't forget to use equipment upgrades. And I don't mean level 1 upgrades. They may be better than nothing but if you have the choice then always go with high level upgrades. Also try to choose ammunition upgrades according to your enemy. Geth=disruptor, Reapers=armor
- Most classes fight on mid to long range so identifying and taking out targets that are closing in, like banshees, phantoms or hunters, can make the difference.
Combo Gameplay:
Biotich or Tech powers are very nice for many reasons but the most obvious is the possibility of creating tech/bio explosions which do a ton of aoe damage and can be the difference between losing and winning on gold. On that matter here is a short guide on how to do all that stuff.
Biotich Combos:
- For initiation you need to place a lasting biotich effect first (Warp, Singularity, Stasis, Reave, Pull)
- For the Explosion you need to hit this lasting effect with a different biotich effect. (except Stasis, singularity)
- If you play an engineer then don't use any of your abilities on an allready marked target or else the combo will have to be restarted.(watch for the blue animation on the enemy texture).
- If you can, then don't shoot at enemies affected by those effects because that could stop a combo that could possibly take out a whole group of enemys or the enemy breaks out of stasis before the combo is finished and so a lot of damage will be wasted.
- If you have more then one biotich character in your team then please try to help eachother out in form of putting throw on allready marked targets even if it doesn't give the points to you it will still help your team get enemies killed faster and there is no room for egoism in gold matches. Nether does it matter who got the most points when you lost the game.
- If you want to play an adebt but there is allready an Asari adebt on the field then maybe consider switching to the Drell adebt because then your combo initiation abilities will be different and so you will trigger eachothers explosions much more often and make life easier for the team.
- If you are going up against an armored target or any other big target then crowd control abilities don't work as an initiation (Singularity, Stasis, Pull) so don't bother trowing them since it will only give you a cooldown and don't help anyone.
- If you are planning to play using combos then consider only taking a pistol as a weapon since combos are pretty much like aoe Widdows and trying to use combos with -100% cooldown beacuse you have 2 heavy weapons fitted is just useless. I personally favor the Paladin or Carnifex Pistol since they are still capable to take out smaller enemys very quick.
This guide is far from finished but of course I don't know everything and I
have my preferred ways to do things which may or may not work for everyone so
please post suggestions on how to make it better.
