His character sucked in ME3 though. They insisted that the VS have inane trust issues with Shepard for working with Cerberus and otherwise did basically nothing else with those character arcs. Breaks my guddam heart. He was still a good friend like last time, but that's about it.

Also, him hitting on my MaleShep was beyond awkward. I genuinly thought I was one paragon option away from an accidental romance. I made sure to lock back in with my LI before I had any meaningful conversations with him. Didn't want to risk it.

In ME3...Idk...I really didn't like the way they drew him. The animation seemed so weird to me.
The actual love scene was awesome. Great. Other than that, something felt off.

Also I'm 100% sure that if he were an alien and not human, he'd be more popular. Part of why people hate him (and Ashley and Vega too) is because they're human and don't bring anything new to the table like Garrus, Liara, Tali and others do as representatives of their exotic new races.

But considering I'd rather deal with a siren in my ear then hear Ashley's annoying whispery voice that's not saying much.

Had to kill him though. I needed to save Ashley so I can shoot her in ME3.

This made me lol hard. I have to admit that's the only reason I keep my scarce Kaidan dead saves.

I'm playing my second playthrough, my female renegade Shepard. All my characters go back to ME1, so I've had this character for...almost 4 years. I romanced Kaidan in ME1, and even though he was Carth 2.0, he was still endearing....and also the only non lesbian romance option.
ME2 was a weird encounter with him, but I figured they were just setting him up better for ME3.
Now...in ME3....this dude is the whiniest, and most annoying character I've ever seen. I walked in on him in the Starboard View room, after the Cerberus Coup attempt, and he was sniffling. His voice actor NAILS the character...but the character is a real chore for me to sit through. Maybe because i'm a guy, and I'M not like that. Is there any guy on Earth who is this ultra-sensitive and whiny? Anyone else have this problem with him? For those who like him, why do you like him?
who doesnt ?
75% hate the guy...he is boring,monotone
also as a squad he suck....ash did a better job

Don't worry, man, the only LI that you can "lock on" without any intentions and knowing what you're doing....is definetely NOT Kaidan. You know....renegade interrupts on different NPCs may bring unexpected results some times... *very evil smiley*...I genuinly thought I was one paragon option away from an accidental romance. I made sure to lock back in with my LI before I had any meaningful conversations with him. Didn't want to risk it.
Also for those who call him "whiner"...quote or YT link anyone? It's not him who gets hell drunk right aboard Normandy, after all...

I like that he didn't blindly follow Shepard wherever, showed he had some integrity and backbone and people who call him whiny are themselves being whiny people because Kaidan never does anything annoying enough to be called out for it. If your dad dies then you're allowed to be a little upset about it, and if your best friend comes back from the dead working for a rogue faction then you're allowed to have doubts. Not every character needs to be the badass assasin or merc type for them to be considerd a good character.

I never thought Kaidan was naive. I dare say, outside of a romance he was not developed enough as a character to draw such a conclusion. The way he was presented to a FemShep in a romance was enough to believe he was cautious and thoughtful. It was hinted that he was growing less cautious as the game progressed.NS Wizdum wrote...
I think they kind of killed the character in ME3. In ME1 he was.... naive? Not really ready to lead. In ME2, he was shown as more independent, and actually developing as a solider. In ME3 he was back to being naive. I wouldn't mind him as a character, but no sane military in the universe would promote the Kaiden we saw in ME3 to any leadership position.
Not ready to lead? Technically he was the CO of your marines and should have been the one leading ground missions while the CO of the ship stays on board. That was his job on board. He was handpicked for this ... and Bioware chose not to do anything with it because inconvenient.
Gameplay and the ongoing story instead have the ship's CO pound ground with random people who chose to tag along. I assume, no sane military man would do that. You just don't rely on strangers when you have perfectly capable soldier's on board. Garrus is a C-Sec officer who moans about following rules, Wrex is a trigger-happy mercenary, Liara is an archeologist you find trapped in a stasis field, Tali is an adolescent on her Pilgrimage.
Kaidan as a squadmate is a follower like everyone else. That's what your all of your squadmates usually do. Like everyone else he suffers from being restricted to ultimately following Shepard because no one can ever truly be Shepard's equal, short of headcanon and inconsequential blah on the codex. If the game gave me an option to send Kaidan to Hackett but continue the romance in ME3, believe me, I would do so. I only recruit him because sending him away doesn't offer me any insight to what he's doing and the romance just fizzles out, unresolved.
Garrus for example is universally loved and respected ... although he never displays anything that resembles leadership qualities. Not for at least two games, where there's a clear mentor/student relationship between Shepard and him. He's a quitter. An idealist who entertains the naive notion that shooting things dead is a way to solve problems and rules are merely an inconvenience. Archangel is really not a shining example of good leadership and foresight.
We are told in ME3 that for some reason the turian military gives a damn about Garrus. I don't think it makes a lot of sense considering his history, but hey, let him have his moment ... it doesn't matter anyway. Eventually he ends up on the Normandy again, following Shepard.
Liara starts out as a nerdy archeologist and ends up being the Shadow Broker after jumping through several hoops ... but this status means squat. It's not even a secret, almost everyone knows and she doesn't even provide insight on what's going on the galaxy. She ends up on the Normandy again, following Shepard.
Shepard is a black hole of character independence. The moment they join him/her on the Normandy they are sapped of anything that resembles true intiative or opinion. Probably even more so if they aren't called Liara (Mac Walter's waifu) and Garrus (Mac Walter's favorite bro).
Why is this a problem with Kaidan but not Garrus? Because people (almost universally) like Garrus and willingly ignore gameplay restrictions. You always want the characters you like best to shine a bit more.
Also, what is naive? I'd say Shepard protesting about leaving Earth in the intro is textbook naive, bordering on completely incompetent and stupid. Need no plan, need to shoot things dead NOW!
Is it naive to respect the rules that were established because they work most of the time? Why? Aren't they supposed to minimize risks and ensure the best outcome? Breaking rules never has negative consequences and always pays off? Really?
TL;DR Characters on your team always follow, never lead anything and rarely even critcize. All of them.
