Anyways, this time I Placed Mor, and Lil up on the hill, I believe south of the circular ruins, and Alistair at it's opening.
I stood in the center and blew the Horn. (NOTE: after blowing the horn in any case - run. Others wise the dragon will land on top of you for some massive damage) Run your Tank to the back of the Ruins so the dragon is facing in words, and his tail and rear legs are out side the ruin opening. Usually he will get "stuck". He can still wing buff and kick, but if you flank him he can't touch you.
One time I pulled everyone back and let Lil stand back an plunk away at him with her arrows. Took a while but she finally got him.
Don't know if they fixed it in the update or not.

How to beat Dragons of any difficulty without using potions:
1. Get a tank. Equip:
Wades Drakeskin chest (25% FR)
Wades Drakeskin boots (5% FR)
Warden Commanders Gloves (10% FR)
Spirit Charm necklace (10% FR)
Creationist's Cord Belt (10% FR)
Helm of the Red (10% FR-don't suck when defending Redcliffe)
Total tank FR: 70%
2. Get tank to stand just outside melee range and Taunt whenever its cooldown is up. Dragon will only attack using flame attacks.
3.Get some mana regen on a healer:
Leiliana song (about 0.5 stamina regen)
Level 2 Combat tactics (0.5 stamina regen)
Wicked Oath (1 stamina regen)
Magister Lord staff (2 regen) or if too poor can use Spellweaver instead (1 regen)
Tevinter Mage Robes (+1 regen)
Librarians Cowl (0.25 mana regen)
4.25 total mana regen minimum. Heal costs 20 mana with a 5 second CD. 4.25 x 5 = 22.5 mana regenerated every 5 seconds. Basically you can spam Heal forever on a tank with 70% fire resist who is only taking fire damage.
This is a basic WoW strat for dealing with any tank and spank fight with no time limits. It basically aims to reach a point where enough mana regen and tank damage mitigation is acquired so that a boss can be tanked forever. Therefore you have infinite time to DPS the boss with no chance of dying.

Well, I finally made my way to the Urn of Sacred Ashes. I couldn't leave well enough alone and just had to blow that shiny horn before leaving. Needless to say I got spanked the first few times. I tried a lot of different approaches, including setting (several) freeze traps while unloading a dozen bombs into the dragon's face, all with little effect. I considered leaving and coming back at a higher level, but I figured the dragon would just use the time to level up some more, so I stuck it out.
For context I'm a level 13 rogue, playing on hard. Thus far I've used potions sparingly and only rarely do I accept a fight where someone gets wounded. I ended up moving under the arches where the dragon couldn't go, used Alistair as bait, and cast force field on him.
You're going to hell. Seriously, what's the point in not using potions if you do this?
I had, IIRC, Alistair, Morrigan, Leliana, and my mage. Alistair used a warmth potion and started hacking away at it. Morrigan and my character took turns freezing it. When it grabbed Alistair I'd freeze it or Force Field it (not Alistair <_<) and take the opportunity to heal up. When it was frozen or CoC was in cooldown I shocked it as much as possible, because my mage deals pretty good electric power. My character probably dealt the most damage overall, but Alistair got the kill. After that it was pretty much Morrigan's show with 2 rogues adding ranged support while Nancy (aka Alistair) took a beating. But I still couldn't make it through this fight without going through at least half a dozen lesser health 'poultices' (hilarious that we drink poultices by the way), and probably the same number of lesser lyrium potions.
So I made it through without losing anyone, but I broke my 'almost no potions' streak. Outside of kiting and spamming potions, what other tactics have people used to take down the purple monster, and what did you do to avoid taking so much damage?
It did break out a few times and go after another one of us, but some distraction and it turned back to Alistair.
I'm sure we spammed a considerable number of potions, but that doesn't stand out in my memory.

I've beaten all the dragons on the first try. Its really not that difficult. My strategy is as follows (as the tank but applies to any PC tbh, you should at least manually control your tank to begin):
1) Engage the dragon with your tank and immediately face it away from your group. Ideally you want your team on the dragon's flank.
2) Make sure Threaten and Shield Wall or Defense is active. I don't believe the dragons have any knockdowns so Shield Defense may be better since you'll have more avoidance as opposed to mitigation which may not be all that effective but it shouldn't even matter much (explained below).
3) Use all your high threat moves. Taunt and Assault followed by a few auto attacks. Be wary of the dragon's actions and don't stay too close.
4) Once you've established threat, move out of range of the dragon's melee. Their breath weapon are easily healed through and you can use balms to mitigate the damage even further.
5) Repeat step 3 until the dragon is dead.
6) You can either set your mage to automatically use Cone of Cold or you can manually do it yourself whenever it is off cooldown. Freezing the dragons if your tank gets grabbed can be a real life saver.
I guess all the WoW raiding experience paid off in this game!
You either have a terrible memory or you didn't beat the high dragon. Every dragon in the game has a knockback that they use EXCESSIVELY. And the high dragon likes to jump up and turn around every 5 or so seconds, so "turning it away with your tank" is relatively pointless. That tactic works really well with only Flemeth.
How do you beat the high dragon? It's really simple. Mages and guys that have knockdown immunity or Mages, archers, and one guy that has threaten and knockdown immunity.
Personally I have about zero healing pots left so I bring Wynne and Morrigan everywhere. Two days ago I beat the high dragon on nightmare with one healing pot, Wynne, Morrigan, DW Warrior and Sten. Only Sten died. I was level 15, everyone else was level 14, and Wynne was spirit healer/blood mage and Morrigan was shapeshifter/spirit healer.
Basically I just had Wynne keep haste up, cast heroic defense, regeneration, lifeward, and heals on Sten, while Morrigan spammed hexes like death hex and vulnerability and elemental attacks like winter's grasp and lightning (she never used CoC because I didn't like putting her in harms way). Sten stayed in threaten and indomitable. And Wynne gave my DW rejuvination and heroic offense so he could keep spamming flurry and use perfect striking twice. It went down pretty easily that way. Actually I lied, because Morrigan did die once but she was immediately resurrected by Wynne and healed to full health. The high dragon likes to switch targets randomly sometimes it seems and poor Morrigan got landed on and when she tried to run away she got fireballed to her death.
I should mention that mana pots have essentially replaced healing pots for me since I killed the elves and I can get infinite lyrium dust still. I probably burned through 6-8 regular mana pots in this fight and 4-5 lesser mana pots.

had my pc and morrigan shooting it alistair tanking it with flame breath directed away from the party and wynne healing allistair, not too difficult. The grabs got him low a few times but with full spirit healer tree and mana potions it was no problem
If you have another Fighter or a Rogue in Melee, Shield bash or Dirty Fighting will make the dragon drop who ever he grabs, same with Ogres.

Other than that, just get a Shield wall or Indomitable tank to hold aggro (or Shale), keep it healed, and wear the dragon down from range (equip bows on your other non-mage characters).
Just bring lots of potions and make sure your tank can survive a grab. My lvl 12 2H'er just solo'd Flemeth on nightmare (needed 25 or so pots however >_>).

That's never ever ever ever worked for me. Dirty fighting is resisted by everything that isn't a white enemy.

Myself and Leliana using bows + ice arrows. Lel used suppressing fire+ rapid shot.
Wynne on healing duty.
Got sten to use threaten and keep the dragon busy and just spam healed him.

Yeah, Shale is a pretty darn good tank for all the "big" dragons all..3 of them in the game.
Three!? Where is the third? I killed the High Dragon and the Archdemon, but a third heh?
I found that the High Dragon on the mountaintop doesn't like to go into the area beside the ruins, on the side closer to its ledge. Ranged can stick there and not get much of anything while DPS and tanks can run her through.
