Throughout time, organic civilizations have proven to inevitably destory themsevles at the pinnacle of their existence. The Reapers maintain galactic order by exterminating organic life within periodical harvesting. The Reapers are in place to maintain the galaxy from destorying itself by limiting the progression of organic life.
It is determined that the Crucible is actually an EMP device designed to knock out Reaper tech and disrupt mass effect fields which would in turn, disable kinetic barriers and thus give the galaxy a liable (and realistic) chance at destroying the Reapers.
This could then lead to a conversation between Shepard and Harbinger. Harbinger reveals that they launch their periodic assaults to test the resolve of the galactic civilizations. Shepard has performed feats that no other organic has ever accomplished and has repetitively proven his worth and capability. Depending on choices made throughout the game and paragon/renegade scores, Shepard has the chance to convince Harbinger that this galactic cycle is worth perseverance. The outcomes eventually lead to the galaxy successfully defeating the Reaper threat. The remaining Reapers retreat to darkspace but promise to return to continue their onslaught to test galactic civilization.
An Epilogue plays out summarizing Shepard's actions throughout all three games and it is displayed the outcomes of their combined reactions. Shepard either returns to Earth and finalizes the end of the war and reunites with his squad members and past friends. Shepard returns to his love interest and the respective ending results in a closing scene between Shepard and his love interest. Example: Liara and Shepard having children. Shepard builds a home for Tali.
This potential ending thus solves all expectations of the fans and opens the door to future games. Since the Reaper threat has not been totally dealt with, an ending such as this could lead to future games pertaining to defeating the Reapers for good, or discovering their origin and an even bigger threat... After all, Mass Effect only takes place within one galaxy. The ending would offer both a degree of happiness and accomplishment, yet the unresolved and continuing threat Bioware wishes to maintain.
In short, this ending satisfies both the fan community and Bioware. Fans get a reasonable and realistic ending, balancing both "happy-ending" and tragedy.
