When I fired up this game, I was annoyed to find no on-screen dialogue, and annoyed to find the game seemed to want me to sit through the voice acting.  So I clicked it on in options.  Normally with these games, even such classics as JE and ME, I just read the dialogue and escape out of the voice acting (unless it's a particularly compelling story moment).  This is because normally (with a few exceptions, naturally) the voice acting in games sucks.

But a few hours into the game, I suddenly realised that actually the voice acting is mostly first class.  I then did something I've never done before: turned on-screen dialogue off, and sat through it more like it's a film, or actually something I'm participating in live, in real time.  Much more immersive!

So I'd just like to say kudos to BioWare for this: it really is like being in a film.

(I was prompted to note this when I was reading some comments about some people finding more hours of gameplay in the game than others - perhaps this might have something to do with it?  If you escape out the dialogue and just read it, naturally it won't take so long to complete the game, even if you do loads of the side quests.  Whereas, if you sit through the voice acted dialogue, and get into the puppet show onscreen, it takes a LOT more time, but is also quite a bit more immersive.)

The main point of this, though, is that it makes me VERY excited about the prospects for SWTOR.  There are a lot of promises on the SWTOR site about how much everything will be voice acted.  One's cynical side thinks, yeah, as if that's going to make a difference.  But now, having played through DA:O, and gotten right into the high quality dialogue, it's making me think that SWTOR may actually break new ground in terms of immersion - for those who want it.  Of course some will always skip dialogue, but for those of us who don't, and if the voice acting is going to be as good as in this game, I think we're all in store for a great treat!

Bioware generally hires some pretty solid voice acting. Male Shepherd from Mass Effect was clearly phoning it in for a quick paycheck, but that's the only one I can think of that was really that bad, and even then he was better than some games.
